Co-workers can be a lot like babies. They get cranky if they haven't napped or eaten, throw tantrums, and want to do whatever they want. I hold my daughter accountable, but definitely not my co-workers!

Yes, absolutely. It taught me to be so much more patient, something I struggled with a lot before kids and had to learn very quickly after LOL. I also tend to approach difficult people with a "what would I do with my toddler" mentality, which sounds a little disrespectful but it's actually helped me be more comfortable with people who won't budge, won't compromise, etc.

In some ways, yes. I'm all about efficiency now. I've redesigned a lot of processes to streamline things and cut out waste. Surprisingly I'm more patient and understanding with people. I've stepped up as more of a leader.

I am damn tired though and I can't put in long hours like I could before.

I think yes. It just gives you a hefty dose of the real world, makes you more efficient, and somewhat changes your definition of "hard" or "hard working." You learn to be on all the time and still manage.

I'm a better worker/manager because I have learned to be crazy efficient. Get in, get $h*t done, get out!

For real though, I question everything on my to do list. How does this work toward the greater good? What will happen if I don't do it? Is there a smarter way to do it? Family time is too important for me to waste my time doing unimportant stuff.

As a new parent, I was exhausted all the time, and the skills I learned weren't really transferable to the workplace - stuff like, how to put a baby to sleep, how to change a diaper with one hand, how to survive extended sleep deprivation, etc. I did learn how to ruthlessly prioritize my time though, which has been useful now that I have more of it.

And now that I've survived the toddler/threenager/is-my-child-a-psychopath stage, I feel like I just got a PhD in human psychology! I understand now much better the importance of following through on promises, creating incentive structures, modelling good behaviour, etc. It's all been surprisingly useful in the workplace! I never realized how much I didn't understand about what motivates people, until I had kids and had to figure it out in order to survive their childhood!

Has becoming a parent made you a better worker/manager?
