It was MISERABLE hot, and we didn't have electricity for three days. Not much you can do there...the whole city was out, so there really wasn't anywhere to go. We knew people without electricity for 9+ days during heat waves of 100+ degrees. Some people had generators, but lots didn't. There were cooling stations everywhere. Windows open and ceiling fan on high was usually enough (we had a window unit in the living room but not the bedrooms). I was also in the same apartment during the big black out in NYC in 2003-- that was f-ing hot, especially after people walked miles and miles to get home. There's no real need for its. Like, 122 degrees kind of a heat wave. That sucked.</p> <p>We hauled water from the river and put it into barrels and sat in them. My little sister sat in her barrel with a snorkel, completely submerged, because she said her head got too hot otherwise, lol. Summer of 2005, in New Orleans. It wasn't that the AC was broken, it was just so blisteringly hot (and humid!) outside that the AC couldn't keep up (it was an older unit in an older apartment). I worked nights, and when I got home in the morning would take a cold shower and go to sleep naked with the ceiling fan on.
