I also have a hybrid, so I could probably make it a lot longer to the next refill. We've gotten close a few times when we road trip and DH is driving. </p> <p>A friend moved across the country and her dad was driving her Prius across the country for her. I think the line was long or the price was higher. She proceeded to coast down all the hills in an attempt to make it to the next gas station without running out. She made it, but I think I've been traumatized. He was too confident in his ability to guess how many miles he had left past empty, and the car wouldn't start for him to leave his work parking lot. He insisted he knew how far we could get on what was in the tank and he was wrong. We were literally in the middle of nowhere in Wales at maybe 2am... we had to walk about five miles to a gas station, and then we walked all the way back to the car only to realize we had left the gas cannister at the gas station. So we had to make the walk again. I had some serious blisters. I played it safe in the beginning, then always push it to the limit though. I noted how far I've gone and how much gas I actually fill up. For my old car, I learned that I go a solid 125 miles even after the light came on. With our new car, it tells me the range, and it's pretty accurate so I never let that go under 50, though to some, that's cutting it close. It almost happened to us on the Penna Turnpike because gas stations are so few and far between. Our car displays how many miles you have left before the tank is empty, but I guess once you hit a certain level, it just says 'low fuel' and the remaining mileage goes away. I kept meaning to go to costco to fill up but had to run little errands here and there over the past week, and now I'm scared I won't be able to even get to a gas station in the city (where gas is at least $0.40 more). Yikessss! </p>
