She uses my laptop to do her homework but I log in for her and get her to the right homework first. This is my 6 year old.

Yes, sort of. We designated an old machine of ours as "his" computer. One of us is always with him when he's using it.

@808love: LO has an email account. Grandma sometimes sends him messages (she CCs us too, so we know to have him check his email). It's pretty fun. :)

@mediagirl: She can work the Windows tablet keyboard. We showed her how to put in the password to unlock it. Oh, and at her school, they are teaching them how to use computers - they use the mouse and keyboard to paint/color pictures on the screen. (I'm sure it's not as fun as Oregon Trail... HA!)

Nope. No clue on phone or iPad either. Don't have iPads and don't give him our phones regularly because he will break them probably. We just pull up YouTube on the phone for him in a pinch.

My nanny kid's grandma was a teacher for many years but retired last year. She told me a story recently about her kids (1st or 2nd grade) taking the state test and they kept hitting the computer screen thinking it was a touch screen like an iPad. No one knew how to use a computer.

My 3.5 year old started playing around with our computer a few months ago. At first I didn't see the harm in letting him type some letters in Word, but now I wish I'd kept it off limits! If we take our eyes off him for five seconds, he can turn off the keyboard or jam up the internet, and he doesn't even know how he did it :silly: He just doesn't get yet that if he presses buttons not knowing what they do, he can do some real damage.

Yes, she had access to one at daycare starting at 3. She does programs at pre-K now at 4. She has assessments that get sent home to us showing her performance on things like letter recognition and reading comprehension.

That being said, we limit her usage at home.

Yes but she is five. I was thinking of letting her use her own email account with a relative once in awhile just so she can send emoji and a few words back and forth at will. She does it on my phone right now once in awhile and she can read.

Computer – no, phone – yes.

I don’t let her use my computer because all of our computers are used for work products and I don’t want to risk something getting messed up.

LO is 4 and knows how to use an iphone very well (my dad jokes that LO knows how to navigate the iphone better than he does, and he might be right!). Her apps are all in one folder so she knows how to get to her folder and knows how to get into and play her apps/games. She also knows how to get to YouTube via Safari and via the app and knows how to get to the videos she wants. She knows that watching videos outside of what has been approved by mom (which is Disney Collector and DCTC videos) is off-limits and results in losing privileges, and is very good at self-policing – for now at least.

Yes. We learned early on that DD1 was a quick learner and we taught her how to navigate to find her favorite apps and turn on her shows from our phone or tablets. Now she'll come in in the mornings, grab one of our phones off the charger and go into the living room and watch her shows on Netflix until we wake up. LOL

We need to work with DD2 a little more before we're comfortable letting her handle our phones (and not accidentally downloading other apps)

Our kid has no idea how to use a computer and seems to have no interest in it either. We never really use a computer in front of her (other than to turn on a movie or music) so she hasn't had much exposure to them yet. She has no idea what a mouse is because we have a wireless keyboard with a built-in mouse (like a laptop).

Does your child know how to use a computer?
