D had a heart cath to fix his ASD. He was just shy of 3 years old. He was put under and intubated, which was the really scary part for me. I knew he'd be under anestesia but wasn't prepared for him being intubated - they did it because they had to to a transesophogeal echo and needed to protect his airway. Ours was done at CHOP and they did amazing. He got giggle juice before had which made him a little groggy and pretty silly. The anesthesiologist came back herself to take him to the OR, and she gave him a piggy back ride down the hallway! It really helped to ease my anxiety about the whole thing.

Shriners is an amazing organization and their surgeons and nurses are top-notch. I worked at Shriners in Philadelphia for a while and absolutely loved it. You are in great hands!

My 4 month old (who's still in the NICU) will be having surgery tomorrow. She's getting a g-tube, nissen and possible umbilical hernia repair. I've made peace with it, but it has taken months for us to be ready to schedule.

22 months for tubes for DS1 and DS2 will have it done at 11 months in April. DH hauled out to a further surgical center because he would not assent to have it done for DS1 without a pediatric anesthesiologist. We ended up with one who was both a pediatrician and a pediatric anesthesiologist with grandkids. We hunted the same guy down for DS2's surgery because he had moved to another hospital. I make DH take the boys because I literally can't handle it.

My kiddo fractured her femur as a 4 month old. Long story short my husband slipped on ice while holding her and they both fell. She had to be put under for surgery to fix her leg, followed by a battery of X-rays, cat scans, and I don't even remember what else.

The whole thing was absolutely awful, and I had an especially hard time with sending her back for surgery, waiting for her to get done with surgery, and having to hold her down for X-rays. That said, the nursing staff was fantastic and our surgeon did a great job of walking us through everything and putting us at ease. Being at a children's hospital definitely helped (we had no choice, a break that severe in a baby that small meant we had to go to Portland).

As much as it sucked, I think it was probably easier to deal with in an infant than it was a toddler. Please let me know if I can answer any questions.

10 months old for tubes. And that was is holding out as long as possible because she was so tiny and I was scared for anesthesia on such a peanut.

Good luck mama.

Yes DS had twilight sedation at 1 for his tubes and just got put under for real with a tube and all that jazz at age 2 for a hernia repair. It's definitely nerve-wracking but both times we've been very reassured in the confidence and bedside manner of the anesthesiology team that worked with us and the surgeons that did the work. This most recent time we went to a children's hospital and it was a much smoother and quicker experience overall. Good luck, it's hard but the day of it actually goes by so quickly, and if it's something that needs to be fixed it's a big relief to just get it over with!

My daughter got her tonsils and adenoids out at 3.5

I was definitely scared, but it was so fast and her recovery was excellent. In all, the surgery really changed her quality of life, so it was worth it.

My little one went under for ear tubes right after 1. That's on the quick and easy end of surgeries but the anesthesia still made me nervous. I talked to the ENT doing the surgery about it and he mentioned he had worked with this guy on kids for many years. The anesthesiologist also called me beforehand to see if I had questions. That helped a bit but I guess in the end you have to focus on getting your kids what they need. I'm sorry you have to deal with it and more than once! Hugs!

We got LO2's circumcision surgery when he was 10 months old and he had to be put under. It was hard to watch him go under anesthesia and I left the room crying 😭

His surgery went fine but he had really bad reaction to anesthesia and threw up so much that we had to be admitted at a children's hospital overnight for dehydration

But I will say that even having been through it, our speech therapist mentioned last week that she thinks LO may have a tongue tie that needs corrected. This would require going under again and I was so anxious thinking about the possibility that I got nothing accomplished the rest of that day. So I don't know that it is something that ever gets easier. :bummed:

@looch: she seems so big and strong sometimes but other times like when I think of this she seems tiny and fragile. Context matters.

The first time I went under was to get my wisdom teeth removed in college.

LO has had three surgeries. Two jaw reconstruction surgeries and a cleft palate repair surgery due to Pierre Robin. It's scary, but they were absolutely necessary for him to breathe and eat properly. They were at 1 month, 3 months, and 8 months old. We have had the best nurses and docs and they really did all they could to put our minds at ease. They even had a nurse call us from inside the OR to give us updates.

It hasn't happened yet, but it will. My son needs an oral surgery and frankly, the thought of putting him under is what makes me nervous and causes me to postpone it.

At what age? For what?

We just had our check up at Shriners yesterday for a check in and X-rays. Eventually T will need two surgeries to correct her issues.

Her first set of X-rays that were not at a children's hospital were really traumatic for everyone. As soon as we walked in the X-ray room yesterday I started sobbing. It's so weird what can trigger difficult feelings. I barely spoke when our dr was in the room- I was just in a fog. Good thing DH was there and explained everything after I had some time. I'm just so worried about her going under.
