Reviving this thread since my DS got diagnosed with RSV today. It's been a rough thanksgiving weekend and we had to cancel a trip out of town. Any tips on how to weather this? When the pedi said 2-4 weeks I almost passed out! They did a nebulizer in the office but he screamed bloody murder the entire time. He's had a fever for 5 days. I hope we are on the upswing but when I said that to the pedi she said not to get my hopes up!!

No, but my oldest did have bronchiolitis when he was an infant and then bronchitis every year after that including one just last month with wheezing for the first time. He was on a nebulizer for two days and it did get better with antibiotics. Sucks. And just yesterday he had a 103 fever. Took him in today and it's a really nasty cold. Poor kid has been coughing up a lung! Hope your LO doesn't get RSV. My son's ped said babies who develope RSV are more than likely going to have asthma later in life. They also said bc my son has been getting bronchitis once a year that he is also more than likely to develop asthma as well. :(

@Mrsbells: our doc prescribed some albuterol. it's not that bad right now (not like how charlie's used to be), but she's been sick for so long (diarrhea, throwing up, fever, congestion, runny nose, coughing, ear infection, etc.) and she had a fever today. i think she is on the mend other than the wheezing. the symptoms can last a long time even when the virus is gone he says.

@Mrs. Bee: Oh no sorry to hear that Olive is wheezing too! How did it go at the pediatrician's?
So humidifiers definitely make it worse? We use one sometimes, I always thought they helped with the dry air

@Mrsbells: at 1 they're too young to diagnose for asthma. but i do believe charlie is likely to develop it based on the number of respiratory infections he's developed. it also didn't help that we ran a humidifier every single day during the winter thinking it would help his congestion/coughing. humidifiers exacerbate asthma and shouldn't be used with kids that have asthma. but again you can't diagnose asthma at that young of an age.

@Mrs. Bee: Thanks for that information. I have asthma and i use an albuterol inhaler as well so I worried that maybe using it on my daughter might make her more likely to have asthma too. But Charlie doesnt have asthma right?

@Mrs. Jacks: Yes our pediatrician did the albuterol nebulizer in her office and then listened to her lungs afterwards and said it had helped a bit. I also notice that even at home she breathes much easier after using albuterol on her. As long as there isnt something more that should be done I am ok to use it for a few more days.

charlie had rsv. even though he had a persistent cough all throughout his second winter, i knew something was wrong when it turned into a wheeze. it was bronchiolitis that turned into rsv and we had to use the nebulizer with albuterol. we've had to use it several times -- our doctor told us we could use it anytime charlie developed a wheeze and gave us a prescription for a lot of albuterol. it really helped with the coughing.

I see RSV everyday in the winter. For most babies, it is just a cold. Some can be much sicker. It's true that there is no evidence to show that albuterol works for RSV... but for kids who are predisposed to wheezing, they can have reactive airways on top of their RSV. You should be able to tell if the albuterol is working for your little one, and if it's not, you can decide in conjunction with your pediatrician to stop it.

We had RSV last year. It was a cough, runny nose and then he started wheezing so we took him in to the Dr. We were told that his oxygen levels were ok, and there was nothing that they could give him other than oxygen (if his levels were low). He said that we would just have to wait it out and that he was fine to go back to daycare. Sorry your LO is sick. We were sick sooo many time last year, it was so frustrating!

@Thehistoryofus: Ok thanks. So maybe its just a coincidence that my baby is sick at the same time that other babies have RSV

We have also had several outbreaks at daycare. LO even got sick enough that we had to take her to the ER but the RSV came back negative.

My baby hasnt been to daycare for 3 days 1stly because monday was a holiday and then she has been ill. She has congestiong, a chesty cough, runny nose and sometimes difficulty breathing and wheezing. My doctor tried an albuterol nebuilzer and also gave us antibiotics for her ear infection. she told us to keep using saline spray for her nose as well as steam and the usual congestion treatments.
When I got to daycare today, there was a sign that there has been a confirmed case of RSV. Now I am thinking that maybe LO has RSV because her symptoms seem to match perfectly. How does your doctor treat RSV. Was my doctor wrong to not think of RSV as a possible problem before prescribing albuterol?
