@HabesBabe: yes he feeds the dogs and we have a family bed (includes the pups). He started feeding the dogs at 12 months old. He was in charge of putting the bowls down and usin the cup to put the kibble in. It was/is messy but he's gotten a lot better and the dogs really don't care if the food is on the floor or in a bowl as long as there is food.

As for sleeping, the little dog wasn't in our bed for a while but started sleeping with us again. And we put the baby down at 8 and lay with him so little dog comes in and lays down. Usually when we leave little dog follows but occasionally will stay in for a bit.

Hmm, I have two little dogs as well and I hope we don't have any issues since our Pom is a little skittish around kids. She loves our LO but he also doesn't do much right now, so maybe thats why she's ok with him?? Who knows.. I hope everything is ok going forward.

@autumnlove: Our big guy gets overly excited in situations like that too where there is noise and activity going on with 'roughhouse' type play. We just make sure he is gated in a different room when we play 'wrestle'.

Nope. The worst that happened was he knocked her over once, but it wasn't on purpose at all. My mom had just walked in the door and they were both trying to get at her, LO was in his way. They both love their grandma so much! I usually try to pick her up so that doesn't happen, but I didn't get to her in time.

@brownie: Your baby feeds the dog and sleeps in the same bed as the dog? I don't know if I misread!

My little dog nipped the baby once. It was a situation we had thought was possible. We made the baby in charge of feeding the dog and putting the dog into situations he wasn't comfortable with to learn to deal with his stress.

Now, little dog doesn't like the baby (runs from him) he does tolerate the baby. He will sleep in the bed with baby and be in the same room as baby. Which is sad cause baby loves little dog.

I have a pretty aggressive dog at home, but he was surprisingly good with LO. He barked at her and did these weird pouncing movements around her, but he was good overall.
Even let her pet him and she swatted/slapped him a few times too.

I think he realized she was family and that he'd get his butt kicked if he hurt her. My dad would have been pissed if my dog snapped at LO or bit her.

@sorrycharlie: I don't know...he is usually so gentle with her! :-( Maybe the combo of airplane noises, seeing her in the air and her happy squeals set him off?

Oh wow! I wonder what about it set him off? My dog hasn't yet but LO is only 7 weeks so we will see. So far he just sniffs her and licks her!

nope. our dog is kind of a big lazy butt who doesn't care about kids (or adults really).

Although, recently, there was an article in the paper about a family german shepard attacking a 2 year old and the kid needed over 100 stitches in his head :( Very sad/scary stuff!

Yesterday, DH was lying on the floor and he was holding LO above him while making airplane noises. This set off our shih-tzu and he lunged at LO and tried to bite her. Scary stuff... guess he couldn't accept a flying baby?!?

I'm so afraid this will happen again...
