J has always been an early riser until just a few weeks ago. After returning from a long trip and major jetlag, we got him on a new schedule and now he goes to sleep later at night (7:30) and doesn't get up until 7am. I'm loving it!!!! He used to be up around 5:30am.

N is definitely an early riser and treating that first wake up as an extension of night does. not. work! He'll just scream (and he can really keep it up). He's incredibly happy when he wakes up at 5am and ready to go! I'm hoping as he gets older, he'll be able to sleep in a little longer!

I would say M is an average riser most of the time- sleeping until 6:30/7. She has had her fair share of early risings- waking up at 5/5:30, but those are usually just phases that come and go! Last week she actually slept in until 8/8:30 a few days, which I don't think has ever happened!

@mamainprogress: You'll understand it if you ever have a child who is unwilling to go back to sleep and screams/fusses rather than falls back asleep or chills in the crib. (And I hope that you never have to understand it - it sucks).

C has always been an early riser, and it sucks. At almost 19 months, I am THRILLED on days he sleeps until 6 am. We had one freak day last weekend where he slept until 8, and I couldn't believe it. My body is so programmed now to wake at 5:40 that I couldn't sleep in anyways...

@mamainprogress: @Foodnerd81: I wish I could just feed DS and put him back to sleep. When he wakes up, he is UP for the day! As in not sleepy, bouncing up and down, ready to start the day and play. He's pretty much been like this since birth. I always thought babies slept a lot. In my house, that's a myth!

@Foodnerd81: I swear we have the same baby :) LO woke up at 6 this morning but I nursed her and put her back in her crib and she slept until 7:45. Usually if she wakes up before 7/7:15 I know it's too early and she'll go back to sleep. I can also tell because when she's up for the day she wakes up cooing. Any other time she wakes up crying or fussing.

She's only 4.5 months old but seems to be a relatively late riser-- usually wakes between 7:30 and 8:30 for the day.

@mamainprogress: Yeah I'm a little confused too-- basically, if she wakes up before I think it's time to wake up (before 7) then I go in, feed her in the pitch dark, and put her back in her crib. Even if it's 6 am she will usually go back to sleep, it's pretty rare that she will stay up. And if she doesn't go back to sleep, it's DH's turn since she's no longer hungry anyway.

@mamainprogress: well, in our case, we have to be out the door for daycare at 715, which means she can't wake up any later than 630 in order to get ready on time. If she wakes up at 5, we'll try (usually unsuccessfully) to get her to sleep more, but any later than that and we don't bother-she has to get up soon enough anyways!

I'm a bit confused about this. Generally I don't like to get up before six so if my LO wakes up earlier or at this time I will just feed him and put him back to bed as I would a night time feed. When we're ready to get up (at about seven or eight) we'll get ready for the day. If you have an early riser does that mean they just won't go back to sleep?

My daughter has shifted over time, lately sleeping until 6 or 7, depending on bedtime and such. Her constant has always been very low sleep needs. 10 - 12 total hours daily, all of her life. 9-10 hours overnight, 1 or 2 for a nap, daily. Just like her father, and it serves him well. I'm so jealous of people with toddlers who sleep 7-7, though. My daughter is still happily bouncing off the walls at nearly 10, right now. And she'll be up by 7, whenever she goes to sleep.

Charlie was an early riser, getting up around 5:30 or earlier until he was almost 2 I think. But thankfully he outgrew it and started waking up around 7:30 or even later. Nowadays (he just turned 4) he wakes up between 7-8am.

Olive has always been a late riser. She woke up after 9am for a very long time, and slept a lot at night. She's been waking up between 7:00 - 7:30 for a while, but this morning she woke up at 5am which she has never done. (Could be because we're trying to wean.) Oh man if she becomes an early riser after we wean, I'm going to be so sad. I'm such not a morning person!

What are your LO's morning waking times like?
