@catomd00: I was really surprised that such strong disappointment started so early! I really wasn't sure how to react. I told her that i was disappointed by her reaction since these gifts were thoughtfully picked out by people who loved her and that if she didn't like them, i could give them to someone else who would appreciate them. Anyways, i'm sometimes at a loss as to how to teach her things! :bummed:

Aw! I understand why her reactiOn upset you, but she's only 4! She doesn't know better. This is a great opportunity to teach her about expectations and graciously accepting gifts before she does it to someone else. I don't think a Xmas wish list means you get everything on the list personally. Just be clear that you are looking for ideas of things she might like to have, or maybe ask her to choose 2-3 things she really wants and then you will decide on the rest.

More specifically, have they been upset because a gift didn't meet their expectation? This question is more for older kids as i never experienced this with my LO until now (4.5 years old).

I was away for a few days and i told DD that i had some surprises for her. For some reason, she had it in her head that i was bringing her princess toys and when she saw the items, she broke down crying and was really upset (e.g., "where are the toys??"). I was really disappointed with her reaction, and it only reinforced my somewhat curmudgeonly views of Christmas and "gift lists" for Santa. Like, if i don't get her all the gifts on her list, what will her reaction be? Catering to her wishes all the time will just make her more spoiled and entitled, won't it?

Has your LO ever reacted this way?
