My LO chokes about once a week. He has zero self control and shoves way more food in his mouth than he can handle.
The first few times were terrifying. Now I'm used to it. Depending on the severity, I hit him on the back, turn him over my knee and hit his back, or fish the food out of his throat manually.
I made sure to get CPR certified, and they also teach choking first aid.

Lil B choked once (when he shoved a huge piece of broccoli DH gave him in his mouth) luckily DH is CPR certified- and got it out. He eats almost all the same food we do- so there a times when he gags a bit (if he doenst chew well enough) but as he has gotten older- not as much- I think it has taught him how to chew/ swallow better!

@rahlyrah: R loves bananas. Like will drop what she is eating if she sees us with one and jumps up and down. I slice it and then the banana kind of has a natural 3 way part, each slice is then in three pieces.

G hasn't choked but has gagged a few times, and it is scary! I've been giving her orange slices, banana, and things like toast fingers, and I think it was the orange slices that gave her trouble. So far though her gag reflex has worked flawlessly and she just spits it right back up. I still watch her like a hawk but I think like anything, it's just time and experience that will make us less super paranoid :)

Good luck! Plus, he's got all those awesome teeth to chew stuff up!!

Thankfully no. But I won't strap her in the high chair cause I am afraid she will and I won't be able to get her out fast enough.

Just start with banana or avocado since they are so soft. He has teeth, so he will be ok!

I don't think it's an irrational fear, choking is horrible! But even though I'm anxious about it, I'm comforted every time my baby gags a little or spits some food out like he's supposed to! I do have a baby CPR page bookmarked ok my phone, though, and want to take a class just in case.

I was TERRIFIED of choking with Wagon Jr. !! Cut his food into tiny little pieces until he was like 2 years old... never let him have raw veggies or anything like that until he was well past 3. Still terrified.

LMW on the other hand.... we've let her have so much and she's only choked once, and that time was on a mini pretzel!! She will fill her entire mouth with big pieces of fruit and just munch a couple of times and everything's gone.

It is about time to introduce table food to B and I am terrified. He eats his purées like a champ but I don't have the balls to give him finger foods yet. I can't stop thinking about what will happen if he chokes. I get irrationally worked up about it. I know he has to learn sometime, and I see so many of you doing BLW, but I can't get over my fear!

Has your LO ever choked? How did you handle it? I know I am being irrational, so I need some tips to help get over my fear!
