@yin: depending on the airline, there can be really paltry, awful choices or a whole array of choices (kosher, low fat, Hindu, vegetarian, fruit plate, etc.). As for if the food would contain allergens is another story since I know your LOs both have a number of different allergies. The last couple of years I have noticed that a lot of airlines offer pretzels or crackers instead of peanuts, but I guess you can never know what other passengers are bringing onboard. Can your LOs have a reaction just being near certain foods? Or do they have to have contact/ingest them?

Quite a few times. We used to live farther away from family and in my younger daughter's first 6 months of life we flew for 5 trips! It has calmed down a lot since then but we tend to go on 2 trips a year, most of which involve a flight.

Yes! We live a 9-hr drive from family so LO's first flight was when he was 3 months old, and he's been on at least 10 roundtrip flights since then (16 months). Most of the time he does pretty well, as long as I'm prepared with lots of snacks and toys. I try to get a new toy or book to introduce when he really gets restless. It also helps to get up out of the seat, go to the bathroom, etc. I won't lie, I paid for TV on our last flight, which held his interest here and there.

@yin: I know it's not on the same level as allergies, but I have a son with diagnosed oral motor issues and as a result, I have to bring food with us every where we go. No one gives me any trouble on the airlines, but I can see where you're coming from if you have a reaction during flight.

DS has flown a lot - maybe 26 flights in 2.5 years? Thankfully he loves the whole thing - airports, looking at the airplanes, being on the airplane. His longest flight was 11 hours.

@yin: I know what you mean--it's the planning of the food and the packing that is the deterrent. But just in case you didn't know, you can travel with foods/liquids in larger amounts than other people if you have a doctor's note saying it's because of allergies.

We just have to avoid dairy and soy, but it's almost impossible to find LO a meal to eat in an airport, so I just pack her foods in thermos containers and bring them with us.

International flights would definitely be more challenging though!

My son has flown twice -- once to Hawaii, once to Orlando. He's 3.5.

This summer, we will be flying to LA!

I actually don't like flying with kids much. So expensive! That's why we have a minivan and I hope for more road trips.

@lamariniere: I would have to pack meals and snacks to get us through the flight. If you account for delays and possibly cancellations, we would be in serious trouble. I am curious if airplane food is a safe option with their allergies. I don't think they would be able to accommodate honestly. The thought of having an allergic reaction on flight is also very scary. Also add in passengers who may carry bags of peanuts to eat on flight, and I'm just a huge mess. Then I have to plan out the logistics of finding a grocery store as soon as we land to plan out their meals for the rest of the trip. :bummed:

LO1 yes, he has been to 3 continents and lots of US interior flights and flights within Europe. I have lost track of how many flights he has been on. LO2 has only flown on 3 round trips on the same continent. We are going to be flying a lot in a short amount of time this summer.

@yin: is this because of the risk of contamination with airplane food?

Yes, we started flying with also when she was 7 weeks and by the time she was 16 months she had been on 40 flights!! We live in Texas, near an airport hub and have lots of friends and family that we traveled to see or for occasions on either the West or East Coast!! She has been on anywhere from 2-4 hr flights to 8 hrs to Hawaii!

I'm really glad we traveled that much because she now loves planes and is pretty good flying. It had gotten harder since she had become super mobile and very opinionated! Further, we just stopped breastfeeding 3 weeks ago and haven't done a flight yet without having that as an opinion(it was a huge problem fixer if she got cranky!).

She will be almost 2 when she has her next flight which I think will be her 50th or so, but we've stopped counting recently! She likes some shows that are 10-15 min each but hasn't gotten into full length movies yet, so longer flights we are still entertaining her quite a bit!

Yes, but up until a year ago my in-laws lived in CA, so we flew out a few times a year to see them. We also really love to travel :silly: LO is almost 3 and has taken 10+ trips involving flying (so 20+ travel legs of plane riding).

At 2, LO got her passport (pic is hilarious) and already has stamps - I didn't get my passport until high school! Lucky duck!

DD has flown twice - once to SF (1 hr) when she was 3 months, and another to cancun (9 hrs) at 2.5 yrs.

DS has flown once - once to cancun at 3 months.

But we're going to start traveling more in the coming years! We're going with them to Seattle (2 hrs) and Taiwan (16 hrs) this year, and Hawaii next year (5 hrs). Excited!

I flew a ton as a kid. Before the age of 4 I had an entire passport filled with stamps! My aunts were travel agents so I went with them everywhere - mostly to the Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong areas. Lots of tour groups too (I don't know how they did it with a kid in tow, but I think I just got used to it). I still love to travel and sleep well anywhere - planes, moving vehicles, etc. I can close my eyes and sleep straight through a 16 hr flight (with the exception of waking up for a meal!).
