One of my DS had a sleep study to check for sleep apnea when he was 6 weeks old. It was part of a longer battery of tests they ordered to figure out what was causing his tachypnea. He did not have sleep apnea.

@anbanan15: yeah I know my dad was told to have surgery but didn't do it. Surgery would suck but at this point I bet you just want some answers. The sleep study sounds promising though!

@T-Mom: Thanks! Yup it took THAT long to get in! Sigh! But at least it's where all his other specialists are and it's a place that deals with this stuff all the time so it was worth the wait. Oh they also said they are going to try and get this figured out for us before the baby comes in November :)

@googly-eyes: I think it depends on the type of apnea? I'm not sure yet...I know I had surgery to correct mine. After my mom said that it was light night and day and I SLEPT!

@Mrs. Jacks: I know! That's why I brought it up every appointment and she kept telling me that same thing :( We haven't seen her since 6 mo :) and his primary pedi put a list of docs in his chart that he approves to see DS and she's not one lol. I'm glad you find it a useful tool! Hope it is in this case too, because we could all use a little extra sleep in our house :)

@banana: Sounds good! I always :heart: @Mrs. Jacks's $0.02 too!

@anbanan15: I'm not sure if she's addressed it. We haven't really talked about it lately but I should ask her how her daughter is doing with her sleep. I do remember she tape recorded her daughter's sleep noises for one night because she couldn't describe it to her doc. If I find out that she did do a sleep study, I'll let you know what she says about it!

@anbanan15: I send young children for sleep studies all the time. It's a great tool for determining whether the child has OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) versus central apnea. And yes, young kids can still have OSA!

@banana: Our primary was closed to new patients when DS was born. After a year of not being listened to (FPIES and GERD related then) we were ready to leave the practice and someone told him (head of the practice) and he called me at home and agreed to take DS on as his patient. Blessing! I'm so frustrated for your friend! That sounds like DS, but you/her were much better at describing it! One pedi told me that babies that young (at the time I mentioned it to her) don't have adnoids so it can't be apnea. They usually ask if he stops breathing and I say I'm not sure, because really I'm not, it's not clear cut if he does to me, and that's the end of the discussion. Yesterday the pulmonologist had me make the sounds and that was enough for her to "get it". Can your friend do a self referral to a children's hospital? We go there mostly for everything now except regular well visits.

**sorry for errors. Responding at work :)

@anbanan15: Glad you switched docs because your primary pedi sounds like he actually listens to your concerns! My friend thought her daughter was just having night terrors but she had them day after day for a year! She would also make weird noises (she described it like patterned breathing with random pauses). Almost like she was breathing, then would hold her breath, snort, and then breath heavily again. Anyway, her ped told her that she would "outgrow" it. Well it's been a year and she still wakes up several times a night. She's almost 5 now!

@banana: Yes it does to me too and if it is I am going to be PISSED! I have been bring it up since DS was just a few days old, but always get dismissed by our pedi's (other docs in the office that we no longer see). Our primary pedi listens more but he thought his waking was due to night nursing and needing the calories from his FPIES and reflux related so wanted to wait it out a little. I had sleep apnea as a child and did not STTN until I was 3.5. My mom says I was JUST like DS too, but at the time they did not do sleep studies. The funny thing is DS's doc is the one that diagnosed me and referred me for surgery :/

@anbanan15: I was going to say that it sounded like sleep apnea. One of my friends went through something similar with her daughter. She would wake up like 5 or 6 times every night. She never did a sleep study but I remember she mentioned that she was going to look into it.

@artbee: Thank you!

@googly-eyes: Our pedi referred us for one at our 2 year appointment, but this was the first appointment we were able to get at the clinic he preferred. He recommended the study due to frequent night wakings that resembled night terrors, however our pedi felt they were happening WAY to frequently (up to 5/night with completely getting out of bed and then others countless times that resulted in him just sitting up in bed screaming) and not at the right time of night (all night not just the first part like typically expected with night terrors). DS also takes FOREVER to fall asleep and doesn't sleep more than a few hours before waking (usually 2-3 hrs). He snores terribly, like a full grown adult that you can hear from the other room and his breathing pattern changes just before waking (it's hard for me to describe, it's not that he gasps right before waking, but he stops snoring then snorts loudly and hard...). Based on this our pedi referred us and we also were at the point where we were going to ask for one if he hadn't. Our pedi did note that he has NEVER sent a child this young for a sleep study (our pedi is in his 60's and was my 37 yr old brothers doc, so he's been around).

At the evaluation yesterday their first thought is that DS has been exhibiting classic symptoms of apnea, which if this is what he has it could explain everything, from the 'night terrors' (which is what they said they sounded like) to his reflux symptoms, kicking his legs upon waking etc. On the paperwork we filled out there was more "flags" we checked yes to than not :(

No but dd is only 11 months and seems to be a pretty decent sleeper and happy in the mornings.

What would make a pedi recommend this?

LO hasn't had any issues with sleep. My niece did though.... she needed a night time diaper for a long, long time. She did some sort of sleep study to see if something was wrong. I think she was 6 or 7.

Hope you get some answers that help with your LO's sleep!

Has your LO had a sleep study done and/or been evaluated by a team of sleep experts? How old were they when they when the study was done? What were the symptoms that lead you/your pedi to want the study? Were the results of the study helpful?

We had a sleep evaluation done yesterday at 27 months (took 4 months to get this appointment!) by an entire team of doctors and medical professionals and will be having a sleep study done next month.
