DS did at the hospital quite a few times after birth (poor kid), then they pricked him to test for iron deficiency and something else. But that happened before he was 1. He's 2.5 now and no draws since then!

we've never had them at the pediatrician, but routine for us with his specialist (on basically the same schedule as the pediatrician) and it is effing miserable. It's the most tramatic and awful experience ever and it ruins our day every time. C is almost 22 months

She had a finger pick for lead levels at her 18 mo. appointment, along with all the newborn things. She did have to get two blood draws for illness, though-one at urgent care, and a follow up 3 days later in a lab. She was quiet, but she didn't cry at all. I was so proud of her!

Yes. It's standard, in Portland, to have lead levels checked at 1 year. We went ahead and checked her iron then too. We're rechecking iron, b12, and vit d at 2 years old.

Recently at his 1 year and we felt like refusing it as he was about to get poked but thank goodness we checked since it was elevated! I have a recent thread about it. He ended up getting 5 shots and the lab draw, I was more traumatized than he was! They also wanted to do a skin test for tb since we traveled recently to South America. We skipped that one for now!

Yes, at 9 months, 1 year, and 2 year well visits, to check for iron and lead.

@MoonMoon: here (in MA) you can do the first one at 9m or 1 year. I had them do it at 9 m since there are no shots at that visit, but her iron was a little low and they had to do it again at 1 year anyway.

It sucks. I don't know if our phlebotomists are bad or I'm a wuss but I hate it. We don't have to do it again though.

Routine test for anemia and lead at 9 months old, maybe we got an earlier one because our house is old? She also tested him, using the same blood draw, for a genetic condition (whose name I forget) which causes favism (allergy to fava beans), because I have s family history of it and it occurs commonly in those with Mediterranean/Mid-Eastern descent. He didn't have it!

Not for regular well checks, but they both had heel pricks for jaundice in their first week. DD also had a health scare around 4 months and had to have blood taken several times in a weekend. It was a little traumatic for both of us because the first time the phlebotomist was awful and couldn't get in her veins. The next couple times she had blood work they were vey quick and efficient, but she was scared to death because of what happened the first time!

Yes, at 2 he had one to check his iron levels. Our ped said it had just become a new standard that usually happens at age 1. He had to have another iron check at age 3 to make sure his iron levels were back up (they were low at 2 years old).

He did great both times! I was shocked that he actually sat still. At 2 years old he didn't cry but he did at 3 once they were all done.

Yes at 1 year for lead and hemoglobin/iron levels. His iron was low at the first check so had to re-draw a month later and luckily passed the 2nd one!
*It took almost a full minute each time to fill a vial from his arm. Poor little guy!
