So the nurse was able to do them with a heel prick, but they needed five vials.... .and he screamed through all of it... :( he stopped after she was done though and is in good spirits and passed out for the night. I was sweating the entire time, but DS1 was a good comfort to his lil bro :)

We had to do bloodwork twice to check for iron and lead. His first test he was low on Iron so had to follow up a month later and thankfully passed then.
The first time he didn't cry at ALL which was amazing, I sang him the ABC's to distract him. The 2nd time didn't go as well but not any worse than shots.

DD needed bloodwork for the lead test at 12 months old. I'm SO glad DH took her to the lab, because I would have been a wreck. It took two people to hold her down and another to take the blood.

Yes, DD1 has had bloodwork at a pediatric lab numerous times to check her iron. She was anemic and has thalassemia minor. We also do routine finger pricks to monitor her iron levels.

Yes, finger pricks for lead and iron for both kids, and one follow-up in the vein for LO2 for a more accurate lead reading. They had trouble finding the vein so they were just fishing around in her arm with the needle:(

Yes, at 12 months for iron. They failed to get a vein after 3 pokes. They tried again at 15 months and got the vein. It sucked. She screamed the entire time and it's certainly not a quick process.

WTF Is with this site today? Half my post is gone. This was supposed to say…

Yes, it's standard here for a lead draw at 1 and 2 years. We just had our 2 year draw on Saturday and it was traumatic!
She was crying "I no like it" the whole time! DH didn't hold her down hard enough so she got her arm free and almost ripped it out, but mommy was quicker (and anticipating that DH couldn't get the job done) and grabbed her arm. It was equally as traumatic getting the bandage off last night! At one year, she was upset by it but not this bad!

DS did. It went as expected. We took him to the childrens hospital so they were able to get blood from the first stick. My biggest fear was them having to try multiple times!

Poor C :( I hope it goes smoothly for you guys!!

He had blood work done when he was two years old to check his iron levels. We had two techs, one to draw the blood and one to hold his arm. He was in my lap and it went really smoothly. He didn't even cry and the tech had to poke him twice! He had blood work done again at three years old and he cried a little bit but still did great.

I think as long as you are calm he will pick up on that. I acted like it was no big deal and I think that helped.

Yes. They do a newborn screening in Texas to check for 53 disorders. She had her heel pricked in the hospital and again at her 2 week appointment.

ETA: oh, just saw that you meant for something other than a heel prick! We haven't had to do that yet. I hope it goes ok for your DS!

Yes at 12 months for iron and lead. I knew it was a finger prick but I didn't realize at all how they did it (I guess I thought they just took a few drops or something?). Anyway, they keep squeezing blood out of their finger and collect it in a little tube. That's the hard part compared to the finger prick! And then they gave me some gauze to hold on her finger until it stopped bleeding which was difficult with a squirmy 1 year old!

But in all, it wasn't so bad and I just realized that I've really gotten over my fear of blood draws because I watched them do it the whole time!
