@glimmersnaps: Haha, good question! I was just joking about the competition... I don't remember who heard it first. Luckily there's been a lot of love to go around!

@mrbee Now I want to know how it all turned out? Who heard it first?

DS is 21 months and doesn't say it at all. I keep trying to get him to... He does give hugs and kisses, though!

I don't have a LO yet, but my niece started saying "I love you" when she was a little more than 2.5 years old. Melted my heart! I think she knows what it means because she said "I don't like him auntie....but I love you!"

I don't think this counts... he doesn't seem to understand how "I love you" works yet haha!

RJ can repeat "I love you" (comes out more like "I you you!") and every now and then he'll say it out of the blue, but I don't think he really understands what it means yet. He finally has words he uses correctly now-- "help", "more please", "byebye", "night night", a few others-- but that's enough intel out of me. Stop being sneaky, Mr. Bee!! ;)

I wrote a blog post about the first time she said, it so I went and looked up the date- she would have been about 19.5 months at the time.

That was the first time she said it, and I don't think she meant it for another few weeks. But honestly? It's my favorite thing to hear! I cried when she said it that first time.

As far as your and Mrs. Bee's competition, my daughter didn't say it to her dad until almost a month after she said it to me. Of course, that was around the time she was really starting to understand it, so it had a bit more meaning by then.

She also took FOREVER before she would give him a kiss. I think that has more to do with the fact that he has a beard, though.

I've been trying to get Charlie to say, "I love you" to me by repeating it over and over. He can say it back, but he clearly doesn't know what it means. But he does seem to grasp other similar phrases, like "thank you," "excuse me," "you're welcome," and "I'm sorry."

I'm trying to beat Mrs. Bee and get the first "I love you," Although of course, parenting isn't a competition where we battle for points from our child. Just in case it is though, I'd like to win this particular event.

Help me out with some intel. When do toddlers start to say (and mean), "I love you."?
