We have one family we keep in touch with regularly and the quality time has been growing as each year passes. We were friends for years and our kids are the same age. Other than that, not too consistent.

He "hung out" (if that even makes sense for a toddler) with the same 3 kids from 5 months until we switched DCP at 3.5 yrs old.

He found a new little buddy - but a year later he moved.

Made new friends and then they went off to K and DS didn't (Missed the cut-off)

Made new friends and some of those followed him to K.

As for 1st grade - not sure who will be in his class yet!!

DD is 4 and has liked the same 3 friends for a good year now

My son went to a daycare, then to a pre-K + afterschool program at a local elementary, and Kindergarten at another local elementary + afterschool at a local synagogue.

That's a lot of places to make new friends! One of his daycare friends showed up in his Kindergarten class (we requested they be placed together), but by and large he's been making new and different friends every year. We've kept up with some of his old daycare friends, but as time goes by more of them move away and so we keep in touch over Instagram or text message (not the same).

The thing is, Kindergarten was a big year for friendship for him where he made a lot of friends. About 6-7 of those kids will be in his first grade class, but he's not close to any of them. I wonder how stable his elementary school friendships will be if there's this much turnover every year!
