I'm sorry! We have I believe GE frontloader and haven't had issues using free & clear. I leave the door open all the time and always say it's a heavier load than it is haha.

@MrsBeluga: Thanks for sharing! I sort of knew that front-loaders had issues, but mold is a constant battle where I live (warm and often humid climate), so anything that grows mold under "regular" conditions would be a complete disaster here.

@skipra: I feel like washing machines can't handle sand as a rule. I have a lot of sand to deal with on a regular basis and I make sure to shake the clothes/towels out outside before they go into the laundry basket. It's a pain, but I've had 3 different washing machines (all top-loaders) in the time I've lived at the beach, and every one has had a hard time with sand.

@ShootingStar: I do usually do them separately, it's just a pain. I'll have to try the heavy duty, extra rinse cycles.

@kiddosc: My mom had those for like 10 years and loved them. I'd definitely try the extra rinse and maybe try the heavy duty cycle too. I'd also wash your husband's shirts separately and do a prewash on them then a heavy duty cycle.

@Mrs. Pinky: we have an he top loader too. You can find several models at home depot or lowes. Ours is fine - no mold issue but I don't feel like it cleans as well. After a trip to the beach everything still has sand even after 2 washes. Never had that issue before! I do love the capacity. The thing is huge!

We have a front loader that's working out fine for us. But maybe it's because I am just so happy not to go to the Laundromat anymore I'd take anything.

Sometimes I toss a wet towel into the machine to trick it into using more water. But generally it's fine. We wash CD diapers into and they come out fresh (after two washes).

I've had a front loader for years and never had issues. There are tricks though to getting it to use more water. Some washers let you do a prewash first, some have a setting for how dirty clothes are, some have extra rinse and extra spin.

Which machine do you have?

@MrsBeluga: yea, they just don't seem clean. He's kinda heavy handed on the deodorant, but it must not be coming out of his t-shirts to smell so strongly. I should try the pre-rinse.

@macintosh: The top loader we gave to my parents was new in 2012 and was very affordable. It worked great, I miss it. Replacing these machines just isn't in the cards right now.

I just wanted to chime in because I recently bought a new (very affordable) top-loader. They make HE top-loaders now, no agitator, automatically senses how much water to full with, multiple wash/soak/rinse settings. I've never owned a front loader, but my new washer gets my clothes way cleaner than the old-style top loader.

@honeybear: Oh the maintenance in a front load is unbelievable! Literally the ring that helps keep the fancy front door sealed is a mold magnet x 1000. If you don't wipe the ring out, or forget to leave the front door constantly open the mold gets beyond out of hand!

@MrsBeluga: No way, they recommend wiping out the washer after every load?! I clean my washer regularly (I do an empty bleach cycle once a quarter or so, depending on the level of grossness of the stuff I've been washing), but that would never, ever happen! I'm sticking with my ancient top-loader.

We have one issue with our front loader... I will say that I hate the fact we have to keep the washer door open to air out or it gets a mildew smell. Which is quite annoying!! Sometimes my clothes get caught on the door if I pass by it.

It was super annoying when my BIL lived with us and *always* closed the door even when we asked him many times not to because of the mildew smell.

I'm definitely getting a top loader next time!

I hate our front loader too. I usually do a pre-wash cycle, use the extra dirty cycle, and use hot water. We use Tide Pods and those sorta work.... in the old days we would use Tide Pods and our clothes came out smelling amazing, now they don't smell like Tide at all but they seem clean. What I really loathe is that if we leave the wet clothes in the washer for a few hours, the entire wash ends up smelling like mold - from the mold that is living in our washer. GROSS!

We too got ours with our house, but Im thinking about replacing and getting a old school top load washer. Cleaning the mold out of the ring once a month is killing my spirit.

We bought a house a year and a half ago that came with a front loading HE washer and dryer. We gave our old top loading washer with an agitator to my parents, since the machines that came with the house were supposedly better. I noticed soon after that all our clothes came out smelling like DH's deodorant, so I switched our detergent from all free and clear, which we had used without issue for years, to a scented all detergent with oxiclean. The clothes STILL come out smelling like deodorant and now that we have a new baby I'm noticing that even pretreated stains aren't coming out.

Is there any way to improve the washer's performance? A better detergent to use? Am I just out of luck?
