I use the Kirkland brand free and clear for all our cloths and cloth diapers.

It can be tricky to find the right cloth diaper wash for your water. We have very soft water so it's easy.

We use seventh generation free and clear for everyone's clothes and Tide powder for cloth diapers. I think your unscented detergent would be fine for baby! I can't figure out why Deft is marketed for baby clothes.

@jennlin821: if you use All Free and clear, you have to get powder version since the liquid version is not recommended per the link @Mrs. Pickle: posted.

I use cloth diapers and I use Tide Free and Gentle. It's approved by the fluff love diaper group. Also, almost every free and clear detergents are fairly weak compared to regular detergents. For cloth diapers, you'll need to add a softener (double check your water hardness per FLU) to increase the cleaning powder. Or you can use Tide. Tide is strong in general and their Tide Free and Gentle is great. I've been using it for a while after switching from another free and clear detergent that wasn't cleaning my cloth diapers as well. We use the tide f&g for baby laundry, too.

I've used Ecos, Seventh Generation, and Whole Foods' 365 Brand -- all unscented, I am very sensitive to perfumes and dyes. But we didn't do cloth diapers. We never separated baby clothes from our own, either, just threw it all in together.

I always used All Free & Clear or Tide Free & Gentle for everyone's clothes (adults and DS).
That said, I LOVE the Dreft stain spray. For whatever reason, it seems to work much better than any other stain spray I have.

Thank you everyone for the excellent advice.

Looks like I'll try All Free & Clear and/or Seventh Generation, whichever I can find easiest and cheapest.

I guess I'll return the Rockin Green...I thought I had done enough research but I must have been looking at out of date information for the cloth diapers!

My favorite low-scent detergent is Ecos (though they do sell scented). I buy it at Costco and I absolutely love it. I hate the smell of laundry detergent (especially while pregnant), and this is the least scented detergent I've ever found. It also works with cloth diapers.

I'm not sure about the cloth diapers but you can definitely use the Arm & Hammer clear unscented stuff on baby's clothes. It's just dyes and perfumes you want to avoid on sensitive skin. I can't stand most scents, including laundry detergent, so we use the Arm & Hammer stuff.

@jennlin821: No advice on diapers, but we use free & clear detergent for all our laundry. The good thing about using the same detergent for adult and baby clothes is that baby clothes are so small they rarely take up a full load, so I just throw them in with my laundry. No need to have separate "baby detergent."

If you're already using unscented for yourself you can definitely use the same for your LOs clothes. I did that when he was tiny and know lots of other moms who did the same. And I assume it's cheaper than baby branded products.

I can't comment on cloth diapers though, sorry!

It's hard to find a free and clear detergent that is good for cloth diapers. They tend to be weak (according to fluff love university). But there are a lot of brands you can use for cloth. If you can find a regular detergent you can stand the smell of, there's a good chance you can use it on your diapers too.

A lot of people use tide.

I don't think Rockin' Green is recommended for cloth diapers.

So I did my first load of newborn clothes laundry with newborn Dreft liquid. AND I HATE THE SMELL!

We currently use unscented Arm & Hammer detergent for our clothes. I guess I assumed Dreft would be unscented as its for newborns....

So my questions are this:
1) I have Rockin Green, which I was planning on using for our cloth diapers. Can I use this for newborn clothes?
2) Suggestions for other scent-free newborn detergent?

Reading through the boards, many people seem to use Seventh Generation or All Free & Clear. However, I like the idea of being able to use just one detergent for diapers and baby clothes, so are there any suggestions about that?

Please let me know, I can't wait to re-wash the one Dreft load. Its making my house smell like a perfume department!
