@lizzywiz: Did they accommodate your requests and explain how it got "lost"??

Glad to see it all turned out well for you! Those kinds of things make me SO nervous too!!!

I'm probably going to be having a few of these moments in my near future, and I am like you, so I will take your success and use it to fuel my motivation! :D

@snowjewelz: @babycanuck:
Meeting was successful!
I went in calm, asked how it happened and what they could offer me. I negotiated for more money if I HAVE to travel, but also retained the option of moving closer in as soon as something pops up. That is not as unrealistic as it sounds- since we work at schools, things change significantly this time of year. I am feeling much more positive about the whole situation and feeling like I was professionally assertive, which makes me feel proud (assertive is hard for me).
Thanks, ladies

Definitely ask them why, and tell them that it will make you even more committed to your job having a better work/life balance.

Explain how disappointed you were with being 'lost' in the process - you thought they would be better organized.

@lizzywiz: If they sound hesitant or can't really give you a good answer then they're totally just making you do what no one else wants to do b/c they know you can and will do it! A better result would be if they really have some scheduling/staff conflict, but maybe they can move you within a certain time frame... Best of luck!

I hate being confrontational too, but I agree that as I get older, I do get more assertive.

Also maybe ask why they shot it down? Push them to tell you why and give you an explanation.@snowjewelz: Excellent idea. I didn't consider asking them to explain.

Go you! You can do it!

I don't think you need to get angry... But just think of why you do not want to be away from your kids for 1 night every week and explain firmly that your family is your priority and that's why you made the request. I would also voice that you are disappointed something can't be worked out as you've had good relationships with the company/co-workers/upper management/etc. Also maybe ask why they shot it down? Push them to tell you why and give you an explanation.

I wouldn't make a threat but if they're smart they should be afraid that you're gonna jump ship!

I work around my state in schools and heath-care settings. I requested to be moved closer to home so I wouldn't have to be away from my kiddo 1 night a week. I found out yesterday that my request had been 'lost' and not accommodated. I have a meeting tomorrow to discuss the options, which look limited.
I am an excellent employee, with consistent 'exceeds expectations' reviews from every facility I have ever worked at.
But I am also known to be too nice, which is why I am getting the shaft, I think.

I often don't express anger in the work place because I feel like it is not effective in getting what I want, but this time I do want to express some sort of significant anger/ disappointment/ something and also let them know I will be looking at other companies without it sounding like a threat.

I don't want to be dramatic or burn bridges or anything, but I don't want to just roll over and take it, either.

any experience or advice is welcome!

On a side note, I am so frustrated with being punished for good behavior. I routinely get placed at hard to work facilities because I am easy to get a long with and I deal with crap like this 'lost' request. Something about being older, having a kid, has decimated my tolerance level for this b.s.
