I can't remember exactly but I know he felt enough relief within two weeks that he felt like it was worth continuing. Like he wasn't convinced going into it but he chose to stay on it that long because he felt so much better. He calls it our bland soft food diet stage. I forgot to mention most of our veggies were cooked soft for easier digestion and most of our meat was soft too bc we ended up crockpotting a lot and eating a lot of soups and stews and mild coconut curries.

I couldn't get on the GAPS train because it was too rigid and too expensive and not doable for my husband. But I could cobble together the main gist and eat gentle foods and push probiotics and stay off common irritants. We used the recipes from Elana's Pantry for occasional baked goods or breads using almond flour.

I do a low FODMAP diet due to a history of GERD and sensitivity to lots of foods, including gluten. I'm allergic to diary and legumes anyway, so this diet isn't a huge stretch for me. I've definitely noticed less bloating and only the very rare occasion of reflux or heartburn. I can tell right away when I've eaten a trigger food so I've been careful to avoid those things.

I am doing AIP right now for my Hashimotos. It is hard but I am already improving after less than a week. I gave up gluten about 5 months ago and that in itself completely fixed my digestive issues, so you could always start with that. It was hard at first but I dont miss it at all at this point. You get the most bang for your effort with gluten and dairy from my research....

ETA: I just saw you are already doing those haha. Low FODMAP might be helpful for you then!

@matador84: dairy is the same for me! It almost always made me sick growing up. I never drank a glass of milk or anything and ice cream would getto me sometimes too. Then I got pregnant and it went away and I just kind of continued in that pattern. But I do think it causes problems for me and I'll rediscover them if and when I attempt to reintroduce.

@hellobeeboston: Ive been gluten and dairy free for about 2.5/3 weeks now. But the bloating and distention is new-ish and I feel like it's because I may neee to focus on repair and not just elimination, if that makes sense.

@2littlepumpkins: thank you! I'll check her out!

@gingerbebe: this is the exact thing I'm hoping to do for myself. Did he see gradual improvement over time or not much until closer to six months?

I was worried that this thread wouldn't get much response, thanks for chiming in everyone!

I eliminated gluten for 2 weeks this summer and then did another 2 weeks of gluten and dairy free. Definitely a huge lifestyle change and I had to learn a lot about GF/DF alternatives that are out there. I had a lot more energy and lost 3" in my waist alone. I didn't have much of a reaction when I had to reintroduce gluten, but when I had to reintroduce dairy--omg. I had a feeling I was always lactose intolerant and that pretty much confirmed it!

@Mrs. Sunshine: have you thought about doing an elimination style diet to try to zero in on exactly what is causing the issues? I think if you start with gluten and dairy that would be a good start. Or even just start with one. But you need to give it a week or two. Then move onto other items...

@Mrs. Sunshine: The peppermint was for gastric pain, yes. I guess what I had was post-infectious IBS after several rounds of antibiotic resistant bug over about six months. So everytime I would eat I felt sore. I try to do the natural stuff as much as I can because I feel like eventually all the drugs even OTC have side effects. It is helpful to have a good GI while going through this, but a lot of it really is trial and error and it's so slow and can be so frustrating when everyone else doesn't seem to have this issue!

I came across this vlogger yesterday who has quite a few videos about endometriosis.. I know she found some treatment that rid her of it, but I haven't seen all her videos so I'm not sure what her specifics were...

My husband had terrible reflux, bloating, and digestive issues so I did my own diet for him. I took him off gluten (and basically no grains except rice and oatmeal), put him on probiotics (Align), had him drink Braggs cider vinegar in the morning, took him off coffee and soda, and had him drink kombucha all the time. We also made homemade bone broth fortified with extra gelatin powder that we incorporated into our food (we had a lot of soup) and stayed off beans and crucifers. We ate lots of kimchi and lactofermented veggies and drank a lot of water. And didn't eat much tomato or nightshades or acidic foods. No booze.

We did it pretty religiously for 6 months and we got him off Prilosec and now he can eat most foods without issues. He chose to stay off most dairy tho.

@2littlepumpkins: Thanks for sharing! The main con of attempting to try to iron it out on my own is that I'm not quite sure which diet would be the best fit for my particular issues...I'll totally look into Floratsor, I've heard of it before. Are the peppermint supplements for gastric pain or general? I have endometriosis which is why I tend to have such a high intake of NSAIDS, because I can't not be able to function. I'm also gluten and dairy free in an attempt to manage the pain. But I'm open to trying peppermint too!

@Mrs.Someone: that's super interesting about your son! I'll look into the app, thank you!

Another FODMAP fan here! There's an ap by the diet creator that makes it easier to figure out. I don't strictly follow it anymore myself, but we recently put my 2.5yo on it was he went from waking at least twice a night to sleeping through within 2 days. It has helped him immensely.

I have more or less just done low-FODMAP for the past few years. I have had to go through periods of recovery but I've had good months too. I also was dairy free (reading labels necessary!) and it was a lot of trial and error. The nutritionist at my GI's office (I had to see her because at one point I was pregnant and unable to gain) also recommended making bone broth from bones which you can buy at the counter at whole foods. I didn't see much success but mostly because I was lazy to make it to whole foods and do it, since I didn't love it, lol. She recommended doing it very plain in the slow cooker. I also take probiotics. I took Florastor which is a yeast and a bacterial one called VSL3 which did a lot of good for me. It can be a bit of an adjustment because it's a pretty powerful one. It is expensive though. There's a prescription strength you could look into but if your symptoms aren't at the severity to take the Rx version, my guess is it would do more harm than good. Peppermint supplements have helped a lot with pain but they don't help with the heartburn/reflux. I also keep gasx on hand at all times. When I get bad I mostly eat carbs, which I know is not that healthy but white bread, grilled chicken, rice, etc..those are the safe foods. Last, I had to figure out for me that I need to eat when I feel hungry or the pain gets worse. And I CAN'T overeat. Some people just feel uncomfortable but for me it could be intense pain for days. So pacing myself helps a lot. Sorry for the novel, it's been a lot of trial and error for me over the past few years. Before the whole illness thing I had a super strong stomach!

@MrsADS: thanks! I'm really struggling with bloating and distention. To the point where I can barely even eat, so I need to do something! I've been on several rounds of antibiotics and a lot of pain relievers in the past 10 months or so, so I know I've gotta nurture my gut!

Yes - I have followed a low FODMAP diet at various times for my GI issues. It really helps but it's extremely difficult to follow. After being on a crazy elimination diet for a YEAR for my protein intolerant breastfeeding LO, I haven't gone back to it since. I may try it in the future. It was recommended to me by a gastroenterologist for IBS type symptoms (crazy bloating, constipation/diarrhea, awful gas, etc.).

I think the idea of the low FODMAP diet is that after following it strictly for a while, you kind of figure out which foods are big triggers for you and avoid those or that category of foods.

Why did you go on it? Was it self-instituted or initiated by a doctor or naturopath? What diet did you follow? What were the hardest parts? What were the best parts?

The short of it is, I've really struggled with my health this past year. I have seen a really good doctor but have suddenly begun having very pronounced and uncomfortable digestive issues and I know that much of it is my lack of gut beneficial foods and a few recurring lazy food choices. Any advice is welcome!
