Mine did that too after 6 AM. I always tried to put her back down before letting her sleep on me and one day she just stayed asleep in her crib.

@kjpugs: I agree with a heating pad. In the cold winters night it just might make the difference. Put in the cot when you get up to feed and it should be nice and toasty by the time she is ready to go back down.

@kjpugs: couch or chair co-sleeping definitely aren't safe but have you thought about a floor bed?

And you have NOT ruined your baby or her sleep!!!!!

I remember after some of S's night wake-ups it was hard to put her back down again (most of the time, night was fine but occasionally she would go into "day-mode"--when we also couldn't get her down in her cot!). I would say just keep trying each night, she'll eventually get it... or, if you felt like experimenting (though no one really does at that time of the night!) could you try waking her an hour earlier than she would normally wake and see if she goes down again easier? I wonder if she thinks that at 5/6ish it's time to get up for the day?

Have you tried transferring her after she falls asleep on your chest? I'd wait 20 minutes since that's supposed to be how long it takes infants to get into deep sleep. Two things that work for us are warming up her RnP with a heating pad before the transfer (we obviously take it off before we lay her down) & Dr. Sears' "laying hands." It seems so simple but I literally press on her chest/tummy with my hands for a few minutes after transfer, and then very slowly take them off. It has really helped!

@kjpugs: you haven't completely screwed yourself. we went through this phase, him sleeping on me after 5 am, and it turned out fine. i just kept trying every few days, and one day he transferred to the crib just fine. honestly, i wish i'd stopped freaking out and just enjoyed the snuggles. now i beg him to sleep on me :)

@Ash: LOL, so true! IMPOSSIBLE to turn down!

My step MIL scared me with stories of couch co-sleeping she encountered from working for DCS (ie- not happy endings) so I'm pretty sure sleep doesn't happen for me. But it's worth it for the snuggles sometimes. I just hope I can find a way to transition her out of it!

Plus, how can you turn down Effie snuggles?!

I think the frustration is just that ALL other times, she's great. She sleeps until 4am or so in her crib on her back swaddled fine. She naps in her swing on her back just fine. Just this one time of day, only a warm body will do, LOL!

I don't think you've screwed yourself. H was sleeping on her side/belly on me, but she transitioned into sleeping on her back in the crib fairly easily.

@kjpugs you have not screwed yourselves, I promise. The belly thing is interesting but @dandelion gives a good suggestion to try to get all the bubbles out of her tummy before bedtime. Maybe even lay her on the floor for a while on her tummy (or on you for a while on her tummy) and then transfer her to her back. Your mom sleeping with her on her, that's so sweet. :) She's only 10 weeks old, you have a lot of time to figure things out. It's hard, the lack of sleep is very hard, but you'll get through it!

@kjpugs: I guess just try to make sure all the bubbles are out of her belly. Plus, you're warm, so maybe that's part of it, too.

It'll change, though...babies change constantly all the time.

@Dandelion: yes, on her belly. That would be interesting to figure out if that's it, since she HATES tummy time, but loves to nap on us on her belly. LOl and yes it would still mean no sleep for us!

When she's sleeping on you, is she on her belly? Could be that after eating, it's more comfortable for her. I had to give up and let DS sleep on his belly for naps, because they let him do that in the NICU (monitors and all). But, I watched him like a hawk, so that's probably not ideal for nighttime.

Oh dear. I am afraid we've screwed ourselves over with this since even my miracle-worker mom couldn't fix it.

When LO would wake up at night (she always has, with few exceptions, one wake up, usually around 4, since she goes down kind of late for the night.) She's 10 weeks tomorrow, by the way. Anyway, it used to be that at her wake up, I would re-swaddler her, and put her back down in her PNP in our room (where she sleeps.) Well, she started NOT being ok with that a few weeks ago. So I thought maybe it was too much swaddle so after her wake up tried a sleep sack, or footed PJ's. NOPE. HUGE NOPE. So we transitioned to her being taken out of the swaddle, eating, and then going back to sleep in her swing with me sleeping on the recliner next to her. That worked for a few weeks, but then she started not being ok with the swing. I mean, usually it's fine, but just not after her night wake up.

It's so hard because she clearly WANTS to sleep. She gets into that ultra-fussy, overtired-baby mode where you're like I CAN TELL YOU NEED SLEEP. JUST SLEEP! Anyway, when the swing stopped working, I started letting her sleep on me in the recliner.

I'm back to work now so clearly this is NOT optimal!!!! But I can't get her to do antyhing else. My mom is here visiting/helping and woke up when LO did at 5:30 this morning. I had been telling her about LO's habits for this wake up and she was saying oh yeah, you can't keep up with that, it's not good for either of you, etc. So I figured she'd try to get her to sleep and, being the miracle worker she usually is, she would figure out a way. I got up at 7:45 to start work and what do I see? LO sleeping on my mom. I asked her and she said she tried everything else and LO was having NO PART of any of it!!!

HELP! I gotta figure this out! I plan to try a Merlin sleep suit when she's closer to 3 months. The swaddle works great at night when she goes down for the evening, but just after she wakes up, all bets are off. She's SO good- she's been giving us a good stretch with just one wake up for so long, I couldn't ask for better! I just need to find a way for her to get back to sleep after her wake up without it being ON me. Open to any and all suggestions.
