Living in Asia has fortunately given me loads of great travel opportunities outside the US. I had hopped to visit 30 different countries by the time I turned 30 (in 2013) but didn't quite make it due to having a toddler, getting pregnant again, and revisiting some favorite vacation spots. International travel is fantastic, but I'm looking forward to being back in the US one day with my kids and checking out all the national parks. For a while it seemed like I was spending more time abroad than at home. I studied abroad in England my junior year of college, then went back for another year for grad school. After a few years of being back in the states, I got the travel bug again and joined the Peace Corps, and spent almost 2.5 years living in a podunk town in Kenya. Hardest and best thing I ever did. For short term trips, I've been to southern and west Africa, and Peru, which I LOVED. (I have not been to Australia or Antarctica.) I made a point of traveling a lot in my late 20s and early 30s. Some of my favorite trips include Peru, Japan, Guatemala, and Zimbabwe. Skiing in Austria was pretty amazing too :-) Now that we are having a baby, I expect to stay local for awhile and maybe spend vacation time at rental houses or some such. I know I could take my baby on a long haul flight but it seems like a lot of hassle and I don't think it's worth the cost and effort. It's for more 'independent' travelers- ie they have days with no plans so you can do your thing. Small group travel, local guides, really great itineraries, and just a great company. They focus on the more authentic travel experience rather than a sightseeing trip, which is my preference. I also met DH on a G Adventures trip to China so I have a soft spot for them :-) @loavore_mama: It is group travel but considering you need to take a ship to get there, I don't think there's any way to get around it, short of being a scientific researcher.....or a Royal on a charity mission (ie Prince Harry just recently!) @looch: it's actually only four days in Antarctica, the rest of the time is either in Ushuaia or en route to Antarctica whilst crossing the Drake Passage! I'm with you though, I'd love to see a good chunk of South America on the same trip! Ok, enough of me planning an Antarctica trip! I live in the US and have been to China, Malaysia, Australia, Canada, Mexico, France, Italy, & London. I feel like I'm missing something! I am soo blessed by them because as a working adult & now married woman TTC-ing, there is def not as much of a budget to travel. I haven't been on a flight longer than 2.5 hrs to reach another country, so my options are limited. I hate flying.
