Another interesting tidbit in the article I read was that the darker your skin, the more sun (UVB) you need . For somebody fair like me, it said I only need about 30 min per day, but somebody with darker skin would need a few hours, so more likely to be deficient! Something to consider...

@mrbee: you should start feeling better soon. I knew I was deficient last year because I had extreme fatigue even after a full night's sleep.

I haven't. A friend at work was tested and was pretty low. She's gotten her number up to over 40 now (was about 15 before) by taking supplements and tanning a few days a week. She said the risks of tanning (skin cancer) are worth it for her to get Vit D back up into normal range. She says she feels better than ever. Interestingly enough, I did research and it said 75% of Americans are deficient and milk, for example, doesn't have nearly enough Vit D to help most people get enough. I think one cup of milk had like 200IUs and you ideally should get a few thousand IUs a day. Something along those lines...I plan to get tested next time I need to see my doctor.

Yes, I was tested at the beginning of the pregnancy and have been taking 4000 IU each day. Hasn't done much for fatigue, though.

yup, but i'm good =) i do have a serious B12 deficiency that is almost under control, now that i just have monthly injections of it. so much better than when i had to do them weekly! it's amazing how much better you feel once you're getting all the vitamins your body needs! today i feel awful (tired, kinda grumpy, and my hands and lips feel fuzzy), but i know tonight i'll do my injection and tomorrow i'll feel AWESOME

@tororojo: hahaha! I love that you're also accounting for the natural Vitamin D from the sun while driving!

I don't think I've ever been tested for this deficiency!

I don't know if I've ever been tested! But I drink tons of milk and a cup of OJ each day. And my car windows aren't tinted so I always feel like I get too much sun when driving.

Yup! When my Doctor did the pregnancy blood test he also tested for vitamin D and it turns out I was low. I hadn't eaten anything that day yet though so I wasn't too alarmed, but I did start taking the supplements immediately.

I wasn't specifically tested for it but I was told I was very deficient in Vitamin D based on my blood work when I was 9 weeks pregnant. My doctor had me taking 4000 IU a day throughout my entire pregnancy!

I just got tested and my Vitamin D level is a 26.5... according to the email I got with my results, my levels are supposed to be 32.0-100.0 ng/mL.

This could help explain my feelings of tiredness/fatigue, although I always figured that was just b/c of the kids. Anyway on my doctor's recommendation, I'm starting Vitamin D supplements asap (and will eat more foods rich in Vitamin D and try to get more sunlight, though that's hard in this weather).

From what I understand, it's pretty common to become deficient in Vitamin D... especially since I'm not outside in the sun that much and don't drink much milk or OJ:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/27/health/27brod.html

Hopefully the supplements help! I read that it can take 6-12 months to fully recover from a Vitamin D deficiency... man what I would give to have more energy!
