@Rainbow Sprinkles: we've always gone to hawaii in December which is rainy season for both maui and kauai. It's much sunnier in southern kauai than the north during rainy season. I don't remember which part in maui is sunnier but we've gone to kaanapali during rainy season and it did rain.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: another place we stayed, a few minutes away from Kannapali, was Hale Mahina - 406A. It definitely didn't have the resort/hotel feel that the Mahana had (for instance, the Mahana has tiki torches lit each night)...it seemed more like a residence, but it was a really nice home base. It had great views and awesome swimming and snorkeling. There were almost always 2-3 sea turtles right out front. My husband was able to surf a little bit after swimming a ways out.

http://www.halemahinabeachresort.info/Aloha_%26_Welcome.htm
Vrbo probably has other units in the same complex, but we were really happy there...and when my grandfather got really sick and had to be hospitalized, they let us stay 3 extra days for free (until they had someone else scheduled to come in).

The other place we stayed was a cheap condo in Napili bay. It was a little further from Kannapali, but it had a sheltered beach and ok snorkeling. We had a studio that was $99 a night over Christmas 4 years ago. I think the condo complex was Napili bay...I'll have to look up the unit though. Nothing fancy, but clean, modern, and steps from the beach.

My parents had to stay for 2 months waiting for my grandfather to recover, so they stayed at a slew of other condos. If there is one you are interested in, I can ask if it's one they know.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I've been to Maui and Oahu and if I had kids in your age group I would go to Oahu and stay in Ko Olina (where the Disney Aulani resort is). There are timeshare condos there that Marriot owns and you can probably find a rental on VRBO. There are four manmade lagoons that are sandy and beautiful and tranquil, snorkeling is not bad, car rental is way cheaper in Oahu, and I just feel like Oahu has more to offer kids. We stayed in a Westin once and stayed in condo once and we vastly preferred the condo experience.

@BoogieBea: yes the Marriott has a mini water park and a whole water park area for kids!

Isn't kauai a bit rainier than maui, especially in april?

I believe we stayed at the marriott once in maui. Is that the resort with the big slide at the pool? If so, we loved it there and had so much fun at that pool. On our last Hawaii trip, we went to kauai and loved it more than maui like others have mentioned. We stayed near poipu beach in the south. It's such a great spot for families because there's something for everyone. We rented a condo nearby so we were able to cook most of our meals and just eat out a couple of nights. My kids are old enough to hike so we went on this amazing hike in the north island, I forget the name of the town at the moment.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: check out HonuaKai rates via VBRO and see how they compare to Costco. We didn't end up staying there, but walked through the grounds and ate at the restaurant there. It has more of a hotel feel than most condos, for better or worse. We stayed at a condo next door (Mahana) that was right on the beach... I think it is one of the closest high rise condos or hotels to the water because it was built before they were required to set them back further. It had amazing views of the ocean, a great (but very simple) pool and BBQ area. The unit we rented was clean but not super posh: however the views were incredible. The beach right out front might not have been the best for swimming though? Can't remember... I think there was some coral to watch out for. We also stayed at a few other places, but I need to look up the names.

@Mrs. Jacks: @Rainbow Sprinkles: I like Maui a lot but Kauai was AMAZING with a kid. Hanalei has a bunch of kid friendly beaches but awesome for adults too. And I would definitely do a condo and cook my own food. Eating out breakfast, lunch and dinner with a toddler got old super fast!

I know it isn't on the list, but @MrsH: named the place I think we stayed here before we had our son. Loved it, and it looks like it was kid/family friendly. Loved the ability to cook, and the condo setup lends itself to a separate space for kiddos. The pools were amazing, and it was right next to a good beach, if I remember correctly.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: we stayed at royal lahaina and the marriot in kaanapali. The pool at that marriot was pretty cool my son was only 10 months when we went but is cool for kids and right on the beach but the rooms are small but they supply a crib. Royal lahaina we went pre kids it was nice and right on the beach but crappy pool. Never stayed in a condo. In Waliea we stayed at the grand wailea and that place was awesome. Hope u can convince him and find a great deal!

I recommend Maui Outrigger El Dorado vs Royal Lahaina. It's just on the other side of Black Rock, so you get the exact beautiful scenery of Kaanapali without tripping over other people. If you want to go to the amenities of Kaanapali, it's a short walk away. El Dorado is condo style and very comfortable. They are a great deal.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Royal Lahaina--great beach, lousy pools, nice rooms for adults, other amenities are meh. Hawaii is a great place to just eat tasty cheap street food. No fancy restaurants needed.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I found that we spent a lot of time fending people off trying to get us to go on tours. The road to Hana is amazing, but we were either in crazy tourist land or at an attraction.

On Oahu, we'll spend a day or to in Waikiki to get our tourist fix but then go to the North Shore to just live. I spent a summer on Kauai, so I know how to more or less live like a local there (hidden rope swings, tricks to getting permits to camp in Kalalau or great hikes, best plate lunch). On the big island, we go almost every year so it feels like home. There is so much to do there and it's so big that we don't feel so touristy there. We've also developed a group of friends there and it feels great to "come home" in a way.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I'm not sure what your budget is, but this is where we have stayed the last 2 times and have really loved it. We use it as part of a time share but you can reserve rooms through them when they're available. It literally has about 5 steps down to a great beach that it shares with the hotel next door. Never crowded and so beautiful. We stayed in the one bedroom, but it has 2 bathrooms and a fold out couch and is really good size. It also has a full kitchen. Have fun!!

We always use VRBO. I feel like you can get more for less. We stayed in a condo on Kanapaali beach when we went to Maui. But Maui is my least favorite of the islands so we usually go to the Big Island, Oahu (need to go back soon!) or Kauai.

@Little Misters Mom: Thanks, I appreciate that input!

Most important to me I would say are:

Within short walking distance to a nice, sandy beach (no rocky shores)

Kid friendly

Nice pool area (nice enough you'd want to hang out there all day), poolside bar and kid-friendly water activities are a plus.

Something that feels cozy, and like a good "home base" when travelling with 2 kids. A place they can run around. (This is why Aina Nalu in Lahaina looked nice to me, they have a huge grassy area near the pool, but it's in town, a good 15 minute walk from the beach).

Definitely not looking for fancy, posh, or high-end.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Just to add. I'm looking at pictures on their website. And you can see the beach is on one side of a retaining wall. When we were there, the water came up to that wall (in August) there wasn't any beach. That may have been seasonal and if the beach is there then I'd say it's a nice but not fancy, secluded place to stay.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: It was very quiet. The pools weren't that special but we basically had them to ourselves which would be nice with kids. If it's enough for you to sit by the pool with a beautiful view of the ocean then I think it could be nice. But if the beach/sand itself is super important I'd probably pass.

So being close to the beach is important (VERY), but so is having a nice, quiet place to relax. It seems like the beach front hotels (not just ocean front) are SO PACKED. What do you think?

I also was looking into a condo called Aina Nalu that is in Lahaina. It's not even on the ocean but it seems like a nice homey "base camp" since we will be there with the kiddos.

I'm pretty sure I stayed at #4 two years ago. It was great. I loved it. We did have a friend that got upgraded to a corner suite with a view of the ocean. It was really nice. There were 3 pools and it wasn't too crowded when we went. I would definitely go there again.

@MrsH: I think I am leaning in that direction, too. It's just so hard to know I am getting the best deal. We were thinking about booking through Costco (since we can book the hotel, flight, and car in one fell swoop), but I don't know how to find out if they are giving us the best price per night!
