We do laundry almost every single day. One of my kids inevitably does something to their clothes that requires immediate soak and wash, the baby is also a happy spitter (so that's usually an extra outfit and at least my shirt to get washed), and DH works in a restaurant. I typically just put lights and darks in together and just wash everything on cold! I start the load at night and move it over before breakfast. Then as my kids get dirty I put their clothes right in the washing machine. I fold every couple of days- it's time to do it when the clean laundry basket on top of the dryer is full and so is the actual dryer lol. I do sheets and towels weekly.

@lamariniere: @psw27: Laundry is the one household chore I am good at 😆
And I am a laundry snob, so we run a load of white warm, white cold, dress shirts & blouses, light cold, light warm, dark cold, dark warm and a load of jeans a week. Then I make nice piles for clothing type and person usually while watching TV at night and then I put it away the next morning.

Laundry is the one chore I feel like I stay on top off. The big things are that our washing machine is tiny, so no point in waiting for a large load to build up, and DD and I both have fairly small wardrobes, so laundry needs to happen regularly so we have things to wear!

Also, we have no extra baskets so things need to be put away quickly or then the dirty clothes have no where to go.

I will credit my laundry quasi-success in part to my part time nanny. She will often fold laundry unasked, and just this monday she ran all of my laundry unasked. I nearly fell over. I used to be sort of picky as to how I did my laundry. Until someone started doing it. Then I got over it ;) Well, except for my husband. He is the absolute worst at doing laundry. So, long story short as long as its folded, I can get it put away, but it will sit for days in the basket, clean but in a pile.

I do it during the week if the basket is full.. then try to put it away when it is done (dh puts his own away, I make him!)

But typically on the weekends I do 4 loads. Everyone's mixed together. One light, two colour, one dark usually. Then I fold everything and sort mine into one basket, the kids into one and DHs into one. I put mine and the kids away as soon as I can, usually when it's all done on Sunday. Dhs sits forever but I don't care! Haha

@looch: maybe it's just me, because my husband doesn't mind laundry and is also really fast and efficient about putting it away. But also, he hangs his stuff a little sloppily and I like to hang my stuff/the girls' stuff just right... but I can fold undershirts and towels and stuff super fast.

When we do the kids' laundry together, we fight over who gets to do the folding stuff because it's so much faster--we fold pajamas, undershirts, socks/undies and tumble shorts, and hang everything else.

My mom usually helps me put away girls laundry. For everything else I usually put away at night after the girls are in bed. Right now our stuff is a little tricky since DD2 is in our room; I end up doing it on weekends during a wrap nap!

I follow some recommendations from A Slob Comes Clean. We do a laundry day on Thursdays and wash all the clothing laundry in the house. Sheets and towels on the weekend. The other thing I like from her is the suggestion to fold and put the laundry away as soon as it comes out of the dryer. It seems counterintuitive since it would be more time-efficient to throw the next load in first but putting it away right away really helps.

We've never had issues with laundry. Our strategy is basically divide and conquer. DH and I each do our own clothes, once per week. I tend to do sheets, he does common towels, we each do our own bath towels. We used to do LO1's stuff on Friday nights (after bringing her sheets home from daycare), but now that LO2 is here, we basically combine LO1 and LO2's stuff and do it as needed. So maybe 2-3 small loads for the kids each week. Either DH or I will do them, and we share the folding as well. I think because we share the chore so well, it doesn't ever feel terrible.

I am rocking it on maternity leave! I wash and fold about every three days. I know that once I go back to work and am handling two kiddos that both hate sleep that I'll never have time. No clue how laundry will get done; I'm enjoying these tips!

ETA I don't sort at all and just wash everything on cold. I'm probably ruining all our clothes but whatever, it's easier!

@lamariniere: that might be part of it for me too, I didn't have a washer or dryer in my apartment for about 10 years so it seems luxurious now! No more finding quarters or dragging it up flights of stairs = heaven!

@psw27: count me among the laundry freaks who don't mind. I had to schlep to laundromats for years, so having it in my apartment now is a dream. :silly:

I WAH and do a load of laundry probably every 3-4 days. I rarely sort, but none of our stuff bleeds, so I just toss it all in together. Each kid has their own basket and my DH and I share. I will do one basket at a time and add clothes from someone else's basket if the machine isn't full enough. I put everything in the dryer (or hang dry) immediately. Sometimes I don't get around to folding until the evening, but it takes less than 10 minutes and I enjoy the OCD aspect of making piles and then putting things away.

We don't have that many clothes so that helps a ton! DH does his own laundry (he is terrible at putting it away though). I do everything else. Sheets and towels get washed as needed and folded immediately out of the dryer. My laundry and kids laundry get done once a week, usually on the weekend. Sometimes a basket of clean laundry will sit out for a day, but our house is tiny so it has to be put away.

I'm the laundry person and haven't found a way to tame it. If I'm not feeling like crap thanks to the weather or kids, I can manage a load at night after work. The kids laundry takes the longest since there's so much of it. Once we got our big washer/dryer, I don't have to do as many loads of their stuff since washing and drying doesn't take forever like it used to.

I like things folded a certain way, but I am pretty fast at it. I enlist my son to help fold and put away certain items. He's getting decent at folding, I have to say, but he has to be in the mood for it.

laundry is my nemesis. Like you, I don't mind washing/drying it but I hate hanging it up. I'm also a person that hangs most clothes (including kids clothes) instead of folding, so it takes longer.

My husband does his own laundry and does it in a much more timely manner than I do. Our nanny does the kids laundry 1x a week and generally DH will do any odds or ends of theirs that need to be washed outside of that 1x. I do my own laundry only.

I'm usually caught up with laundry. I cloth diaper, so I do a lot of loads per week. Not saying I never have a dryer full of clothes that's been sitting around for 24 hours, but generally, if baby's gonna have a clean butt, the laundry is getting done. I don't have as much trouble putting things away, but both I and DD have pretty limited wardrobes, which makes it less of a chore to put things away. She has 1 drawer of clothes, I have 2 plus some things on hangers. I also tend to leave the clean, folded clothes out in the living room so I'll remember to throw them in drawers in the morning - I wouldn't be able to leave them out, they'd be too in the way.

I like doing laundry so clearly I'm a freak. But the way I find myself actually putting it away all comes down to how I fold it. I fold each item into a separate pile based on its drawer/home - so for me it might be tank tops, short sleeve shirts, long sleeve shirts, active wear, pajamas, undies/bras and hang up clothes. I can buzz through putting that stuff away really quickly because I just grab a stack or two and walk to the dresser. I usually do a load during the week of LOs stuff but otherwise I do it all on Saturdays throughout the day.

The washing machine that we have has a delay feature, I can put a load in the machine in the evening, for example, and it will start at 5 am. It's done by the time I wake up in the morning so I can just put it in the dryer. Then I'll fold it when I come home from work that night. I often put a load in the machine in the morning so it's done when I return home.

@avivoca: Yes, we have a two year old so the clothing volume required in a week has obviously gone down a lot from the pee/poop/spit-up days! Can you just get those square bins for your kids and separate their clothes into the appropriate bins and not bother to fold?

I think for adults the key is really to not have many clothes.

ETA: My clothes that I have worn once and need to be hung back up in the closet often collect all week on my dresser til I bother to do that on the weekend. Just in case I was making myself sound all perfect.

@petitenoisette: Oh yeah, sheets/towels don't get washed very frequently at all, maybe once a month. We also don't wash after the first wear, but man, two kids going through clothes (especially when one is pooping on everything) has just added so much. I also hate folding. HATE IT. And I don't have a dresser (tiny room).

I am not saying this to brag but we have no problem keeping up with laundry and I'm always perplexed by laundry posts. :P So I was trying to think of what we do that causes this laundry magic and these are my ideas:
1. Fewer clothes in particular for me and DH.
2. I do not wash a lot of my clothes after the first wear. I wear a tank under almost everything I wear and that always gets washed and underwear too but basically everything else I wear more than once before washing. I wear the same PJs/house clothes several days in a row before I wash them.
3. My DH used to say things to me like "we need to do the laundry." He learned that he did not need my permission or assistance to put a load in and now takes the initiative to do it as well.
4. We have two laundry baskets, one for lights and darks and so do not need to sort prior to putting in the load. Everyone's clothes get put in there so I don't have to combine multiple laundry baskets.
5. I like folding laundry and am happy to do it while watching a tv show at night. Putting away sometimes takes a few days but I try to do it the next afternoon. I sort everything as I fold so it doesn't take me more than 5 minutes to put everything away.
6. We don't wash our sheets very frequently :silly:
7. I only have one kid so far.

@erinbaderin: I've wondered that too. When H was a baby, all the kids wore pajamas all the time. But this new crop of babies is super stylish so I feel like I need to keep A in outfits or her "dressy" pjs.

On the upside, I'm not washing pajamas for H all that often because she insists on sleeping in her clothes. Win.

@avivoca: That's true - when it was just me and my husband I could do a lights and a darks every two weeks and be fine. When we added B I added a load of his clothes on the off week, mostly just because I didn't want to buy 14 pairs of jammies. But now that we have two kids I'm doing three loads every week and that doesn't even include sheets and towels! I wonder how much sideeye I'd get from daycare if W just wore his pyjamas all day?

@avivoca: It's crazy how people who wear such TINY clothes create so much laundry! No clothes, you might be on to something ;-)
