I decided to quit before turning 30, read a book and never looked back. I have had zero cravings and it has been 4 years. Honestly, the smell turns my stomach now. Quit almost 4 years ago. I was an almost pack a day smoker, and quitting was one of the hardest but best things I ever did. I do however get the smoker's cough whenever I'm sick. When I was in jr high and was out grocery shopping with my mom (I was full blown sick), the butcher told me to lay off the cigs. I know for a fact that I started smoking because I felt left out when literally everyone would go outside for a smoke and I was a non-smoker. It felt ridiculous to go stand around with everyone, not smoking. It also looked, well, fun. Eventually it also became a social crutch. I needed something to do with my hands while I was walking around, something to hold onto while I was talking with friends. A cigarette gave me that. I finally quit because DH (then BF) gave me an ultimatum. He said he didn't want to marry a smoker, and that 1 of 3 things would happen: 1) We'd split up (not an option) 2) He'd start up (not a real threat, but he did occasionally have one when we were out drinking...still not an option). 3) I'd quit I used to crave it sometimes, especially when I smell it. But my SIL smokes, and I had a drag off of hers a few months ago, and it made me sick. I'm allergic to the cigarette smoke anyway. It's not good for my asthma. During junior/senior year of college, my roommates got hooked on smoking from one of the roommates. It was really gross. One of my roommates did it to fit in. She passed out one day from not eating from smoking too much. That time living in the house was just gross. So much stale smoke, My inlaws are lifelong smokers. They're apparently more on and off, but in the almost decade I've known them, they've smoked. They only smoke outside. I really think that smoking has aged them a lot. My MIL is in her mid 50's and looks much older. My mom who smoked briefly in her 20's looks so much better than her at 10+ years older than her. My boss smokes and runs marathons. It's pretty easy to justify the habit in a Boston winter when it feels like -17 outside but you still want that cigarette. How we ever justified it once I was living back in Florida? I have no idea. Luckily I never really got hooked on it, and quit for the most part very soon after I stopped hanging out with my smokey friends. I was still an occasional social smoker (as in, whenever I drank a lot I wanted a cigarette) when I met DH, but I stopped immediately when I saw how gross his house was from being a smoker (who smokes inside their house?! I thought it was so gross). I made DH quit before we had kids, which is over 2 years ago now! I'm so proud of him! I've quit for 2+ years now and love being a non smoker :) Although they pass through my mind every once in a blue moon it's so easy to just remind myself how much better it is to not be chained by addiction and the thoughts disappear. I didn't ever touch them in highschool, but when I was in college and my whole circle of friends were smokers, it was an easy choice to join them. It was a casual habit then, and eventually I went back and forth for years going long stretches without smoking and then ramping back up to a pack-a-day during really stressful times. When I had roommates who smoked, or dated someone who did I always ended up smoking a lot more. I cut back to the very occasional cigarette a while before I got pregnant and then haven't touched one since I found out about LO. There are still times when I crave one.
