I got notices a few other times but didn't have to go. Poor DH though - he served on a federal case that lasted a few weeks and then had to do it a few months later at the state level (just one day) and then just 3 years later got called again and had to go in for the day. I won't ever get to serve though since I work for the District Attorney of the county I live in, so oh well. I actually knew the defendant. But I got excused earlier in the process for medical reasons. I should've called ahead to get out of it, but I didn't. So I had to go up to the bench to explain I had a bladder disorder that would prevent me from sitting that long without a break. After I said that, the judge said "oh, let me turn off my microphone." Thanks, guy! I would be interested to serve, but I probably won't since DH works in litigation now. I also have extremely strong objections to the death penalty, and wouldn't want to serve in a state that has it. Also I'm breastfeeding! I've been called 4 times (once federal) and DH, who has also lived in MA his whole life, has never been called. The first time I was called I had to go to Lowell, which was the WORST. I have been called 5 times (in 3 different states) and DH, who has lived in MA since 1999, has been called once, in college. And I have to go to the not nice part of town in October. At least it could be downtown and easily t accessible?? So yeah, been called 5 times. Twice, had to show up and sit around for a few hours then go home. Once was on a trial- it was a pretty boring trial but still interesting to watch the process. Sucks to be a young minority... I was the only non-white person under the age of 40 in all 3 of my jury pools, no joke. I don't know who puts those jury pools together. All 3 trials were uninteresting (2 drunk driving and 1 domestic dispute) and I had to go to a not-so-nice part of town where the courthouse was. Now that I live in a county with the courthouse in a nice area, I've never been called. The next one was for a murder trial for 4 men. I got out because my income is from tips so I'd be losing a ton of money since it would be a long trial. I was able to defer since I was going to be out of town. Then I didn't get another summons for 4 years! It happened to be my first week at a new job, so it was kind of awkward to call my soon-to-be employer and explain that I'd be in for two days and then out for at least a day for jury duty, but they were good about it (as lawyers, you can't really say too much!). Of course, most lawyers don't want colleagues on jury panels, so as soon as I was called into the room with the others in my group and counsel started going over the questionnaires, I was sent home... I was kinda bummed, it was a really interesting case. I haven't been called yet in my current city. If you have to take a month off, here or there, you can, as long as they can make quorum (the minimum people needed to vote). But it was actually pretty interesting overall. I've had to apply for exemption 3 times and I attended court 3 times without being selected. I was selected about a year and a half ago for a criminl trial. We were there for 5 days or so and they went and cancelled it for reasons they couldn't divulge!! I had taken like 13 pages of notes! The second time, I had actually postponed a few times due to pregnancy/work/birth, and finally went two months ago to serve on grand jury. Turns out they had enough people for grand jury and sent us to be petty jurors. I got selected for a vehicular bodily damage case but on the day of trial, we were told the parties settled.
