It was very awkward for my husband, though, when we had our falling out because he and my sister are friends on Facebook. My MIL found out she had breast cancer the weekend DH and I got engaged. Rather than telling us about what was going on, her and my FIL just stopped communicating with us at all without giving us any indication of why (we actually thought they were unhappy with the engagement). FIL told DH's brother what was going on and BIL accidentally spilled the beans to DH but then we were more upset because FIL/MIL didn't tell us about it directly. They finally told us after MIL had had a mastectomy and was declared cancer free. My grandparents divorced after 30+ years of marriage when my mom was pregnant with me, and it wasn't a pretty divorce. My mom was always very close with her mom, so we've never had a relationship at all with her dad. The few times we have seen him, he has gotten my name wrong...and I don't think he would have ever recognized me if we ran into each other on the street.</p> <p>My mom has 3 older brothers, and their families retained a relationship with him...it has always been very awkward. Over the past year or so, there has definitely been resentment from them towards our family.
