Once I didn't know I had gotten bumped up. It was a bad day of travels, and I was checking myself in when I noticed my seat had been changed. I didn't realize it was changed to first class, and I was annoyed b/c I wanted the seat I had picked out. The day had been just bad enough that I was prepared to battle. The service person said, "Ok, sooooooo. . . you want to be moved back down to coach???" The extra room is great, and you still get all the perks of sitting in first class even if you get bumped up. It's a lot less and still very comfortable. But, the way we've always seen it is: it is such a long flight that it's worth it to us, especially since we don't spend money on lodging overseas because both mine and dh's parents own homes over there. Also- at least in my home country: food and souvenirs are both very inexpensive. So, we pay the bulk of our trip in flights. We were using buddy passes from someone who worked for Delta, and when you use those you get upgraded if there are seats available. It was pretty awesome. We've also been on private chartered flights with his company. With United reward flights, sometimes the cheap miles tickets for economy are all gone, so the expensive economy tickets cost the same miles as the cheap first class tickets and we get the first class tickets. DH also gets upgraded periodically and he will trade with me if we are traveling together. When I was young we did first class to Hawaii because my dad said there was no way he was sitting in coach with two kids for 13 hours!! And then in high school my dad and I did a Europe trip where we flew first class every where (he had a ton of miles from business travel). We had a 16 hour flight to South Africa--and that flight was the best one I have ever taken!! I loved first class...I can only dream of flying it again :silly: I think tickets were like 12k a person? DH's boss paid for it as a wedding gift to us, which was insanely generous. I was nothing but a dirty backpacker at the time so I'm not sure why they saw me for to upgrade but I wasn't about to argue. It was THE BEST 12 hours of my life. I didn't even want to sleep cause I didn't want to miss one single second of the experience. We used his miles to fly to/from our Maui honeymoon in first class and it was amazing!!
