It was a tiny place that just the owners and two employees worked, and they said the owners were just going to work there more to save on wages. However, in retrospect they hired somebody else only a couple weeks later, so unless they grossly underestimated how little they wanted to work there, I suspect I was actually fired. I worked from home once a week and the batch layoffs were scheduled for that day, so I was laid off over the phone. I was in such denial, even as my boss was explaining the situation with the layoffs, I thought he was going to tell me whose work I'd need to absorb. I had to go in the next day and pack up my things but I'm glad I had that day before to sob my eyes out at home first so I could hold it together when I went back in. The HR manager told me that he often runs into people six months later and they say the layoff was the best thing that happened to them in hindsight. I wanted to punch him in the face, but looking back five years later he was totally right. Then they met with each employee individually to notify them which group they were in and discuss severance. It was pretty awful because it came out of nowhere, but it ended up being better for me because I had been planning on quitting in a few months to move closer to my family and my boyfriend (now DH.) I was one of the 2 people that got laid off that day (but both of us had been pretty open about the fact that we wanted to move back to where we had grown up - i.e. find another job.) They kept leading me on and telling me I was fine, that they'd "do something" sometime soon. Then the recession hit (2008) and I was in the first wave of layoffs. It was awful. I was bawling my eyes out as I packed up my desk and said goodbye to all my coworkers. I absolutely loved working with them even though my job sucked. There have been a few people here who have been laid off and it was always done in a private meeting. I honestly cannot picture being let go in a meeting with a ton of people. Three times. I work in construction in AZ, and, well... Yeah. The first time the company was actually bought out by a huge builder and we were all given letters in a big meeting with either "We want to hire you on!" or "thanks, but no thanks" basically. The second was privately (another builder that went under, I was in the last batch of layoffs before they closed, so it's not like I didn't see it coming). And the third I was told in my office with another employee in there with us. I was pretty pissed off at that one actually! LOL So I finished payroll and left. My former boss was like "Jen, you don't have to do that, I'll do it" LOL um, no I need to make sure I'm going to get my last paycheck thankyouverymuch. ...sorry for writing a book! She had shown up and all the doors were locked. My company had done 3 levels of layoffs. My staff person and I got cut in the 3 level as we were the last ones hired. We were both called into our "boss's" office together and told. There was another person there from another team (not HR) that was there to witness it. Super awkward. Typically when we have layoffs all affected people are told individually (normally spur of the moment/scheduled same day meeting) and then there is a group meeting to let the others know (also normally scheduled only hours in advance).
