YES! Success is totally possible.
I was promoted from a receptionist to managing the internet sales department overnight (with absolutely zero sales experience).
Initially I was incredibly overwhelmed and felt ridiculous telling a team of seasoned (10-20 year) salesmen how to do their job. I realized that I couldn't tell them to do anything I wasn't willing to do myself, so I made a point of "wearing their shoes", so to speak. That made all the difference.
I worked some crazy long hours, rarely took a day off and made it my absolute priority to learn the business inside and out.
During my 2.5 year time in that position, my teams (I took on an additional dealership and opened a business development center) consistently performed above industry standard and many months, were #1 for conversion in the dealer group.
In saying this, make up your mind to learn everything you can and out-perform everyone else. Determination and time expended are honestly most of the battle.
You can do it!

Perhaps think of it this way: it's a low-risk way to build your resume and add new skills while remaining at your current company. You stay there for 6 months to a year, and if you hate it, seek something new. The bonus being you have a new skill set or experience to add to your resume.

I haven't, but people around me do it all the time. Give yourself credit...you sound like a smart woman, you might have a longer learning curve but I am sure you are capable.

@T.H.O.U.: I'm not worried about the team dynamics since I'd work in one of the same cross functional teams I do now.

I'm hesitant about switching roles to something I've never done. When I think of someone from one of the prospective roles into my technical role it seems obvious that it would never work out (and leadership admitted so). It seems strange then that we're expected to be able to perform roles that are so foreign to us.

I'm also frustrated because I chose my field and have selected my jobs and training to succeed in my field. I've spent 15 years becoming what I am and I take a lot of pride in what I do. When the company takes away that role and offers another, acting like it's the same if feels like a slap in the face.

I had a plan in place already to take business and marketing classes in the fall to make me a better employee in my technical field. I just didn't anticipate switching roles now.

I'm also annoyed because I was laid off last year when my company relocated. I've worked hard here and I was up for a promotion when this was announced and all promotions were put on hold. I know things will work out but I'm still going through all the feelings.

@Corduroy: Ok, so the fear is just new roles and new team dynamics?

@T.H.O.U.: We are guaranteed one of these open spots at our current title level and salary. We will not get severance if we don't take the new position.

If you dont get one of these jobs, will you get severance? Or are they guaranteeing a position just in another area?

My department got slashed in half yesterday which is interesting because the company is doing well and business is growing. Everyone has to interview for the remaining spots and other positions within the organization. We're all in a specialized technical field with degrees in the area where we work. The other positions are category management, marketing, sales, graphics. I've worked with those teams throughout my career but we have different skill sets and I'm worried about how my personality and skill set will survive in those roles against a bunch of MBAs.

I don't expect to get one of the remaining spots in my department since I've been here less than a year. I'm trying for it but even if I get it I would get the work of three people.

We aren't being offered severance because as they keep reminding us we aren't losing our jobs.

Has anyone gone through something similar and survived a forced position change?

Ideally I'd like to stay at home for a few months, wait for this plan to blow up and get hired back when the company realizes the idea was a bad one. But I'm still working through my emotions.
