Identity theft resulting in about 10k worth of credit card debt (all resolved) I had some car parts stolen off my car...which was weird because they were all stock parts, nothing after market. That was just what always got him out of jury duty. He also would say that he didn't believe in the US justice system and stuff like that. He HATED jury duty! But I figure that's just a consideration of the court, if that's even pertinent to the case. That is scary! You may be wrong about the jury thing. My dad thought he would never serve on a jury b/c me, my brother, and my mom were victims of an armed home invasion. Somehow, he got picked for a case about an armed home invasion despite the fact that he disclosed that his whole family had been victims of a similar crime. You never know what they are looking for! @wonderstruck: Thanks. Yes, it was so scary. I was a kid at the time, but like 5th grade, so I was very aware of what was happening, and terrified. I actually needed therapy for a couple of years. And I still get totally freaked out if a stranger approaches my house. So per my dad neither of us have much chance of serving on a jury because we were victims of a violent crime, haha. Luckily I realized it within an hour, so I was able to freeze all my credit cards before the their spent too much. My grandparents home was burglarized a few times when I was a kid, which I vividly remember. Our house was broken into and ransacked, all valuables gone. Our car was stolen 4 times (ok so it was a sh!tbomb of a 1980's car that was easy to break into). Another car was broken into and then set on fire while parked at work overnight. I got some sentimental things from my grandparents and my college books all taken. My ex boyfriend beat the tar out of me. And he threatened me with a gun and held it to my head so when I called my parents to come helpe move out, they called the police and the sent a swat team. It's interesting, after filing a police report, nothing ever came out of that. I thibk he should have been arrested. Whatever. I like to think he's my underlying cause of ally anxiety. A car of thugs pulled up and doused us with a fire retardant and then sped off! It was horrible, the smell! Have no idea why. 2) My car was broken into a couple of times in our closed detached garage. They only stole an older Palm device (remember those?!) and an old broken PC. we called police on them when we caught them in the act. A repeat offender! 3) Sexually assaulted in a Paris subway in college while studying abroad but luckily I was able to get away. There was only one other person in that train car but he turned out to be a drugged up stoned homeless guy who was totally not there so I was basically alone. 4) identity theft a few times, credit card and online credit stuff.... They attempted to pry the door open with a crow bar, then proceeded to try and ram it in. The dog started barking and woke us up. Whoever it was ran off when they saw our lights turn on. So scary. All DH had to do was give the door a tiny pull and it swung open. They had almost made it in. I was in my grandparents' garage with the door open. A man rode up on his bicycle and did something to the front of the house. He knew I was watching just feet from him but I couldn't tell what he was doing. After a few seconds he rode off. I figured out about an hour later that he cut the phone line. I think that's it. Wonder what could happen as a senior citizen?! Mmph! Don't want to think about it. Hopefully I have had my share. And by the way, I think the increased media attention is the reason why we fear more. I notice the more I read the news (almost daily lately) the more fear crops up. My brain can think of more possibilities of harm because there are lots of crazy things going on out there. I loaded them into the car so I could take them to my sister's house that night, but I changed my mind and decided to wait til Christmas day to drive to my sisters. I left the presents in the car overnight. It was stupid and my fault. I was, also, young and in high school. We lived in a safe neighborhood and never had issues in the past. My parents used to leave the house unlocked. Until I realized a creeper standing near me was actually doing it. I freaked, immediately ran off the train, and told the woman working in the station. She called down some cops who were right outside the station, they stopped the train a few stops down to look for him but I'm sure he was long gone. I went to the station to file a report and never heard anything. The station worker and the officers were SO wonderful, though. I was very upset and they were so kind. The officers even offered to drive me the rest of the way to work, though I declined. They had my name, address and SSN, made a fake ID with my info and their picture, and opened about 15 credit cards and maxed them out in 2 days totaling over $18,000 in debt . It was such a mess to clean up because all the cards ended up coming to my house and I had to fight each one individually. We went on vacation and when we got back we saw a rock had been thrown through the living room window and lots of stuff had been taken. The house was a mess. The closest a crime has ever come to me is when I was little....my oldest sister had a crazy ex boyfriend who started stalking her and threatening our whole family, saying he was going to kill all of us to teach her a lesson. One night, he came to our house (my sister was an adult and had her own apartment at this point) and he knocked on MY window and starting calling through the window. I ran and got my dad who pulled out an old hunting rifle, called the police, and went outside to handle the boyfriend. It happened on a Friday, and by the time we were able to get in touch with my Mom, it was 4pm on Friday. We had to get up early Monday morning and stand in line at the Embassy in Madrid to wait for an emergency passport. Luckily, my mom had gotten in touch with someone in the US on Friday evening (after 4pm in a government office, what!) and was able to fax copies of my passport to him, who faxed it to the Embassy, so they at least had proof that I was who I said I was. Even so, it took 6+ hours to get my temporary passport issued.
