Yes, several times! We've travelled around pretty much the entire country, including Northern Ireland. The only county in the republic that I have not been to is Wexford - I've been to every other county! The west is my favourite - Galway, Connemara, and the surrounds... :-)

I went in 2009, with my husband, BIL and SIL. We stayed in Adare and drove in a new direction each day. took the train to Dublin and got around very easily on foot. I loved Dingle Peninsula and the town of Waterford.

I've been twice, but way too long ago.

The first trip, we met my dad's cousins in West Cork (he had cousins that had met them, but it was his first trip) and took a bus tour the second half of our trip.

The second trip was mostly spent with family, but we did travel up the west coast doing some genealogy stuff.

Overall, we were underwhelmed with Dublin. It's very much like many other cities in other coutries. The more rural areas was so much more culturally (and not touristy) Irish.

DH and I went for a week during our honeymoon. We did like a south Ireland tour. We went to Dublin, Cork, County Kerry, up to Galway, then back to Dublin. It was sooo amazing! I can't wait to go back and do the north part.

@lawbee11: I think that would depend on how much it would cost to go there. I didn't find Dublin all that amazing compared to everything else I saw. But, if you don't think you would do an Ireland trip for a long time, and it's inexpensive then I'd go. But, you would mostly have to stick to the Dublin area. I will say rental cars were really inexpensive.

@lawbee11: if you're just in Dublin then you won't need a car. It was pretty nerve wrecking driving on the wrong side of the car, on the wrong side of the road. The public trains and buses were pretty great. That's how we got around.

@lawbee11: Depends on where you want to go. I would recommend renting a car if you want to go to the countryside. If you just plan on staying in cities and using public transport to go from one city to another, it's feasible not to rent. We went with our LO last summer and decided to just take public transportation everywhere so that we didn't have to bring a carseat and that was hard. We missed out on a lot of things to do because we had to follow the public bus system's schedule, which is not extensive and ends early most days. (Example: Bus to Cliffs of Moher was not scheduled well and you basically had to get there really early to catch the last bus back or risk not being able to get back and be stuck in the middle of basically nowhere).

We went a few years ago. A few days in Dublin, then we hiked part of the Wicklow Way south to Glendalough. It was so cool, we hiked from B&B to B&B and saw the most amazing views. http://www.wicklowway.com

@lawbee11: We did all of the above using just public transportation. We didn't have kids then, though.

For those that have been, do you think it's worth going without renting a car? We're planning a trip to London next summer and were thinking about taking the ferry to Dublin for a few days, but we wouldn't rent a car. Worth it still?

Yes, I only went for a business trip so I spent most of my time in a generic looking conference room. I did spend one day sight seeing and it was so beautiful. My impression was that the people were very warm, my colleagues made sure I was comfortable and having a good time during the off hours. Both of my parents' families are from Ireland so I should have made more of a trip of it. I think I'll go back someday with my husband.
