@mrbee: well I'd go with the area near New Paltz. Look up Mohonk Mountain- it's gorgeous! That area- New Paltz, Kingston, Hurley, woodstock, etc is all ulster county, which, of the catskill area, has the most to do. You can look up Ulster county tourism and see what suggestions they have. I'm from Hurley which is a lovely little town with old stone houses from the 1600s. :)The other counties are pretty but not too much to do. Feel free to ask me any questions as its where I lived my whole life until I moved to Texas for work!

@travellingbee: Not sure! My only constraint is that our friends' family lives in Hudson, so they probably won't want to rent a place near there. So I was thinking something closer to the actual Catskill mountains, but don't really know anything about the area!

I'm from the Hudson Valley. Hudson (the town) is much further north, btw. Almost to Albany. I highly recommend the East side of the river- Rhinebeck, Redhook etc. Its a foodie's paradise. There are gorgeous mansions you can tour and FDR's residence which is very cool, and lots of other things to do. Quaint little towns and shops.
On the other side, New Paltz, Saugerties and Woodstock are cool. @mrbee: what area were you thinking of?

I grew up near Hudson. So funny bc when I was growing up, it was not a 'cool' place but it's totally revived itself in the last 15-20 years!

I've been several times because my ex had family up there. It's beautiful but definitely a place I would want to be able o enjoy nature in. Hiking, Fishing, and etc. if its too cold it might be a bit boring. You can go on some beautiful drives though and at night we used to love spotting and chasing porcupines. They are so slow its hilarious. Just don't get too close.

@hilsy85: Do you think it's worth going next week with the kids? It'd be fun to go hiking and fishing, but not sure if that's even possible yet...

@Trailmix: We haven't done the Hudson Valley, but we might actually stay at this place with some friends and they have a place in Hudson, NY. So was thinking they might want to explore another area!

Love the Catskills! I think for nature/outdoorsy stuff, it's amazing!

Have you done the Hudson Valley? There's some great little towns along the river if you are looking for something slightly less rustic :)

We used to go every summer when I was a kid to a place called the Nevele. They had a kids program that was awesome, and my parents got some time to themselves. They are long gone (or changed ownership 100x) but I loved it.

We have a house up there, near Woodstock. It's a super fun place if you like to do outdoorsy stuff. Spring can be hit or miss with the weather and is usually very muddy. I know by our house, there are a few nature trails that are very do able with kids (we did them last weekend with LO) and there is a fun painting/arts place called Fiberflame. Those little towns (woodstock, saugerties, hudson, rhinebeck) are also fun to just walk around, although I know my LO's tolerance for that is not that long.

Public school is out next week, and the cost of a trip there isn't too different from the cost for daycare for two kids!

Was thinking of maybe heading up to the Catskills for two days or so, with the kids... what do you think. Is there much to do there, especially during this cold-ish Spring?
