I wouldn't bring my son to the salon with me. It's an upscale salon, so I'm pretty sure it would annoy everyone there. He would be loud and probably try to run all over the place, so it would be impossible for me to relax. If I need a haircut, I always either ask DH or my MIL to watch him depending on when the appointment is.

Having such a hard time trying to schedule with DH for some me time. This weekend our out-of-town friends are visiting, so that's a no go. I've suggested picking him up after work and getting dropped off at the hair salon. Except my long time salon is a half an hour out of the way. And there would be traffic to deal with. But he says he's really busy this week. My hair is getting so shaggy, and my roots are coming in, so it looks terrible.

@OliviaOblivia: I'm so tempted to try for an early morning appt and hope that the salon is empty.

@MrsMini: Your little girl looks so cute "helping" you take the picture! A budding photographer.

They both came with me when they were under four months. After that point they were too wiggly to sit still in the stroller.
It was actually fairly easy. The salon is empty during weekday mornings, the baby slept, if they woke the other shop girls would just coo over them.
It was "me" time with people fawning over my baby. Felt pretty good.

No. I don't even know if my salon would allow it, and I'm kind of glad, because it may sound harsh, but I just don't want to listen to a baby crying while I'm there. That is one of my rare me time/relax type places where I get to be in a whine/cry-free environment for like an hour.

Since about 13 months he goes with me and gets his haircut while my hair is processing. I go to a small salon with just 3 stylists, and he has free run of the place. I know I brought him once or twice while he was an infant, and he just chilled in his car seat. I don't worry about chemicals. I go to another salon every 2 weeks to have my eyebrows done and he sometimes goes with me then, too. He just watches his iPad now, but when he was tiny I'd just keep him in the car seat.

I've brought her when she was young but my mom was there too. I wouldn't take her once she was out of an infant seat because she's crazy and requires too much attention that I can't/don't want to give while getting my hair done.

I never did for the whole appt - it takes too long to expect him to be patient! But when he was 4-6 months old, my mom watched him and did bring him in so I could feed him lol! It was pretty funny feeding him under the cape thing you wear at the salon.

If I don't take my boys then I would never get my hair done. That being said, the girls in the salon take turns taking them for walks and the like. My boys actually spend very little time in the salon itself. They love all the attention from the girls and I love the attention on me.

@Astro Bee: it's mostly my own fault. I put off getting it cut until suddenly I'm desparate to do it RIGHT NOW, and it's always when Dh randomly is super busy with work and other things and I get mad that I can't make an appt easily. I do this every time.

I'm actually more concerned about the hair dryer noise. My son freaks out when he gets his haircut because of the dryers. I would never have taken him as an infant because he simply wouldn't have stayed calm in a strange environment without me. And he definitely wouldn't have slept/hung out peacefully in the stroller while I was getting a cut. I've taken him a few times as an older toddler/preschooler when we had haircuts scheduled at the same time. That has worked because I bring things for him to do while he waits for me, but he still freaks out anytime a dryer is turned on.

I can't imagine how that would be possible? I had a very awake newborn that screamed if she was strapped in and nursed 24/7.

I wouldn't! For my above reason in addition to the fumes.

@Foodnerd81: I'm lucky if I can cut my nails during nap time. He still likes to nap on me during the day. A bad habit that I'm trying to break. Sitting at a nail salon even with LO sounds like heaven to me now. And poor you not getting your hair cut in so long! Treat yourself, mama!

@Astro Bee: I'd rather do my own toe nails during nap time- would be more relaxing than having her with me at a nail salon! Plus I don't go to very fancy nail salons so sometimes they actually do smell a little chemically so I wouldn't really want her in there.

But yeah it's annoying. I don't have anyone to watch her so I work around dhs schedule. And I have had like three hair cuts since she was born 22 months ago. :(

I could never take my LO to a hair salon while I'm getting a service---no way would she stay in my lap or something. She's way too active. It would be stressful for me.

I've been looking forward to some me time, too. Whether it be getting my hair done (which is starting to look shaggy) or getting a pedicure. And I've been trying to figure out when works for DH. Which got me thinking, if you don't have anyone to watch the little, do you or even should you just bring him? I'd probably be okay with bringing him for a pedicure because he could just sit in my lap and nurse, but a cut and colour takes so much longer. Plus, I'm really looking forward to some me time.

Dh has always brought E, but only because his sister cuts his hair and her friends at the salon love to hold babies so it isn't a big deal. Sometimes his mom times her hair cut for right after his, too. I wouldn't worry about the smell.

Agree with the above. I'd be less concerned about chemicals and more concerned that I wouldn't have a break. Getting my hair cut is relaxing and enjoyable. Keeping my child calm and quiet and entertained while I am stuck in a chair is not. I'd rather work around dhs schedule so he can watch her while I enjoy my haircut.

However I have a friend who posted pictures of her kid sitting in her lap watching the iPad while my friend got her hair colored. Her roots were getting out of control and her husbands schedule was nuts so she just did it. Not my ideal but it can be done.

I personally didn't because that was definitely "me" time. I've seen infants at my salon before and don't think it's a big deal as long as they aren't close to someone having a chemical process done.

How do you feel about chemicals/fumes at the salon? Most legit places have good ventilation, and I don't recall ever walking into my hairdressers, thinking wow, it stinks in here. I'm sure I've seen small kids before getting their first haircut.. Would you or have you taken your infant or small child to a salon? At what age do you think it's appropriate? Would you have them accompany you for an appt?
