@aprk: hmm when's the last time you tried sleep training? I ask only because we tried and failed at 5 months, and then tried again at 6.5...so if it didn't work before, he might not have been ready. If you feel up to it, you could give it a shot--it sounds like you have nothing to lose!

YES. Do it. It turned out my problem sort of resolved itself the week I had my consult, but I learned a ton from it and wouldn't hesitate to do a follow-up. And yes, the free webinar recordings they have online are awesome.

@Kemma: he's definitely got too much going on in his brain I think - he rolled early, and has been mobile since 5 months. only naps during the day for one sleep cycle.

@aprk: totally fair enough that you want to make changes!

What does your wee guy's daytime routine look like? Has he always been a frequent waker? What do you think wakes him up? I know that at that age it was a combination of crawling in her sleep, teeth and not quite enough food that woke my girl up!

@Kemma: Truthfully, I want to just go with it and let him do what he needs to do. But I am exhausted to the point of not being able to function well during the day. I'd be happy with two night wakeups/feedings. Six of them is a little crazy pants. I've been tracking his eating and sleeping and can't figure out any discernible patterns.

@aprk: I'm going to be honest with you and say that the best thing I did for LO's sleep was to just stop fighting it and let it go. I gave up on the expectation that A would self-settle and STTN, I stopped worrying that I was "ruining" my child by nursing to sleep and part time bed-sharing and suddenly I felt so much better. I guess I've just come to terms with the fact that A "feels" her milestones and needs extra nighttime parenting from me.

CIO does work for some babies but a good sleep coach should be able up offer you several different strategies to improve your lo's sleep. You could also try taking a note of your lo's eating, sleeping and activity for a week to see if any patterns stick out that might help you with his sleep.

And DWIW My girl is now eleven months and occasionally will put herself to sleep and can STTN every now and then so there is light at the end of the tunnel!

@aprk, early rolling is WHY we needed Merlin! She can't roll in it, but she rolls too much without it and was up every single hour. She sat up before she hit 5 months old =\.

@Kemma: We have a super active baby too, and early mover.

@hilsy85: we've tried CIO, trading down and dad attending to night wake ups. No go.

my coworker did--she hired someone to sleep train her twins. said it was the best money she ever spent. i haven't tried phone/email consultations, but came very very close. if there is a next time i will be more proactive. i think it's a great idea!

I had a consult with the New Zealand "Baby Whisperer" when Miss A was 6.5 months old and whilst it wasn't a magic cure-all solution it definitely did help!

I don't believe in CIO (and A has never responded well to being left to cry) and thankfully the consultant uses other, more gentle techniques, the advice she gave also really took into account her personality and my limits in terms of sleep.

In terms of my girl, Miss A was an early crawler and very active (both physically and mentally) so we added more solids, a stronger routine and I try to really wear her out between sleeps.

@jojogirl used Isis' sleep consults! I listened to a bunch of their webcasts at work. We had GREAT success with the Merlin, which a few of their consultants recommended. So that swayed us from getting a sleep consult. E is also 5.5 months old

I am at the end of my resources with regard to A's sleep. He is 5.5 months and for the last 6 weeks has been waking up every 2 hours or less at night. It's exhausting all of us! So, I'm going to call for a personalized sleep consult with Isis (http://www.isisparenting.com/product/ISSVV_SSC)

Have you ever had a sleep consult? Did it help?
