I have, when I was in retail management. My store and district managers wanted me to move higher up the totem pole but I didn't want the company to own me any more than it already did, plus I thought long-term quality of life would suck (long hours, hard to plan vacay time, irregular schedule) and I also don't think that being a manager brings out the best qualities in me, though I am good at it. I told them that I didn't want to move up higher but wanted to be as awesome at my current job as possible (had to justify this decision in multiple conversations...people who work for that company are all cheerleader robot clones). After that they definitely started treating me differently (not badly per se, but not as well) and investing in other people instead, which was a good catalyst for me to get up and go elsewhere.

Sort of - I was offered a position where I'd be managing about 5 employees (in an office setting), but I declined because it would have moved me off the career path I'm on now, and I didn't really see any growth potential after becoming the manager of that group. I did stay there, and I got a promotion that's more in line with my aspirations about 2 months later.

I worked as a bartender throughout all of my schooling and more than one of the places I worked at wanted me to manage. This included a lot of responsibilities that I didn't want (accounting,hiring,firing,ordering,..etc..etc)I didn't want to admit to them how short term the job was for me. I also didn't feel comfortable telling them the truth - that basically I dont care about the business part of the company - I just want to take my tips and go home.

Just wondering! Did you end up staying at that job? What were your reasons for declining the position?
