Maybe in middle/high school? my hometown downtown is nowhere nearly as populated as NY, but it was still a lot of people! So it was super crowded and getting from point A to point B was a nightmare, and we couldn't see everything going on. Then leaving after the ball dropped was another nightmare. It was HELL! As others have mentioned, you're literally SQUEEZED shoulder-to-shoulder in a huge drunk crowd in the freezing cold with no bathrooms around for like, miles. I held it from 9:30-midnight and almost died. There was NOTHING fun about it. Security is pretty tight, especially after 9/11. There are no public restrooms or portapotties in the area. If you leave the barricades your spot is gone and some people secure their spots early in the morning. Guys have it easier, they can pee into a bottle. We did Vegas NYE pre-kids, it was pretty fun! We went in the crowds for a couple hours, but had a suite with a view of the strip in Mandalay Bay. We went back to the room about an hour before, and it took the whole time to walk back. It was fun, but insane. As soon as the fireworks were over, it was like a stampede and you had to just go with the crowd or get trampled. We stayed at a timeshare right in between the Bellagio and Cosmopolitan and they shoot the fireworks off right in front of it, so we went down for midnight, then went back to our room to let the crowd die out a bit and then came back down to walk the strip for the rest of the night. I would maybe do it again, but probably stay on the edge of the crowd so it wasn't so crazy to get out of. The parks are always full capacity NYE, but it's a controlled crowd with lots of kids so it's not scary. It's pretty magical there, actually. And the fireworks are insane. I can't imagine Times Square. I recall really wanting to do it at some point when I was younger, but as I've gotten older, big crowds freak me out and I can't handle no bathrooms. We bought one of those club/ attraction hopping passes. The crowds weren't that bad since our passes allowed us to move about easily. We ended up spending most of the night at Madame Toussads. By the time we left the crowds were gone and the street was littered in trash. My mom was very upset when she came home: she said the crowd was too much, it was terribly loud, and people were popping champagne corks and letting them fly into the crowd, and it freaked her out. Huge crowd, no escape, and no bathrooms, plus absolute boredom. It was soon after 9/11 as well so there was crazy security and a tense atmosphere. I'll never do it again. I hung out with my friend on St. Patty's day last year and we were going to go to the downtown block party, when we got there and saw the hoards of people, we immediately looked at each other, said no way, and drove back to her place! My mom drove me, my younger brother, and my uncle into the city on a whim. (We lived on Long Island). It was fun and then we drove home. When I think of the insane security and having to get there like 12 hours early and being barricaded in etc it sounds horrible, and I'm happy I got it out of my system when it was simpler!
