@mediagirl: YES! I just did this. I was told by a dentist that I needed to get an extraction and an implant done and quoted me at $5,000(I don't have dental insurance). I decided to get a second opinion at a place that was recommended by a family friend. That dentist told me that it was very extreme to extract that tooth that he could do a root canal. It only cost me $1500 and was a much faster processes. And he said that $5,000 for an extraction and implant was way to expensive. And the second dentist didn't charge me a consultation fee and overall the office was much nicer and more friendly.

So definitely get a second opinion if it doesn't feel right!

@PurplePeony: they want to do this for 2 cavities in teeth that have fillings in them already. I'm like - take the filling out and replace it with a new one? That's what my old dentist used to do...the thing that really bugs me is the dental hygienist couldn't show me where one of the cavities was from the x-rays. That made me especially suspicious. :/

Yes, and I am so glad I did.

After wearing braces as an adultI started developing pockets between my gums ans teeth. My dentist recommended a very invasive treatment plan to prevent periodontal disease. The dentist I ended up going with didn't see what was going in my mouth as dire and advised the consequences of the first dentist's plan. One thing that is an everlasting part of the second opinions' treatment plan are quarterly teeth cleanings, which is pretty awesome IMO.

@mediagirl: For sure, well okay I take that back. I made the mistake of having my x-rays sent after the fact to a friend who is a dentist in a different city because i thought it seemed high, he informed me I got screwed and to never go back. And I haven't!

I haven't had a second opinion, but I did just have an inlay done. It's basically a smaller crown where only the top portion of the tooth needs to be capped rather than the entire tooth. I had it done because I chipped a molar pretty badly. Mine wasn't quite as expensive as yours, though -- I want to say it was in the $700-800 range? My dentist is still going round and round with my insurance about how much they're going to cover so I don't have the final amount yet. I would try to find a better dentist, though, I've also had crappy luck in the past and finally found one I really like.

For that much money, coupled with a dentist you don't really love/trust, I would get a second opinion.

Oh definitely. I've done it quite a few times.

I have TMJ and one guy did arthroscopic surgery to remove the scar tissue in my jaw. Then another wanted to break my jaw and put me in braces again and rewire everything. I saw two orthodontists who were like FUCK NO. I finally saw a third dentist who suggested my facial pain/TMJ might've been a neck/chiropractic issue.

So yes. I'm big on second and third opinions so that you are making an informed decision :) I can't remember if i was charged for the second opinions, but i probably was charged a $20 copay or something.

Just curious. I've had bad luck with dentists ever since my dentist retired. The newest one just did a crown on me ($1300) and now wants to do two things called inlays that will cost $1300 each. My insurance doesn't even cover half of this cost because they say this price is more than what is "reasonable."

Anyways, I was thinking of taking my x-rays to another dentist to get a second opinion. I'd prefer to get a filling to getting some procedure that is going to cost me the same amount a crown would, if it's possible.

Have you ever done this? Did they just charge you a visit fee?
