I didn't peel them off, I think it's just because they have to soak the nail bed in acetone for so long to get the polish off, and the acetone ruins my nail beds. The first time, they had me just put my nails in a bowl of acetone for 10 min. The second time, they did the cotton-ball-acetone-foil wrap method....but even so, my nail bed was pretty ruined.</p> <p>The nail changed in texture and would peel/crack. hard to explain. The surface looked all cracked) on my fingers a few hours after it was done. My toes were fine. I called my manicurist and she said to come in on the morning of the wedding and she'd fix it. She took the old shellac off and the reapplied it. By the time I was walking down the aisle, it was cracking again. By the end of the evening, it had also begun to chip off the ends. My toes lasted for weeks! </p> <p>My husband works for a chemical company that makes shellac products - primers and stuff (for decorating). He said that because it is hard and brittle, it is very tough on hard surfaces (like my toe nails!). However, if you paint it onto flexible surfaces, it will crack and chip off! Obviously my nails were too soft and flexible for the shellac to adhere to properly. </p> <p>So.... if your nails are hard, go for it! It looked beautiful! But if they are softer (you can bend mine) steer clear! I wasn't a huge fan, to be honest. I expected it to last through my honeymoon and it did not. It started coming apart after a few days and then I couldn't stop from peeling it off because it was driving me crazy. But the peeling left my nails really thin underneath.</p> <p>It did last a little bit longer than a regular manicure, but not enough to make it worth the annoyance. However, my mom has gotten them done and hers lasted much longer than mine.</p> <p>ETA: the one thing i really liked was that my nail were completely set when I left.
