I've handled it many times and haven't ever gotten it. However, my sister gets it to the point that my parents had to take her to the emergency room a time or two when we were little. If someone burned it in a brush pile within a huge radius of us, she got it internally from breathing the smoke. Even her eyes are bloodshot and itching! When I was a kid, we were having a bonfire near the lake at my house. One of the neighbors had done some yardwork and threw the grass and weed clippings into the fire. Well the oil from poison ivy leaves got into the smoke and I inhaled it. My neighbor friend (We were both maybe 9 or 10?) and I got it in our lungs from breathing it in. It was bad, Then I got it on my mouth from kissing my cat after she must have been in it (that was in high school,) and most recently was about 6 years ago, I got it on my face while I was weeding with DH (BF at the time.) He got it that day too all over his legs, because he accidentally weed-whacked it. But I did recently find out what chiggers do. I always knew but hadn't personally experienced it.
