@MaisyMay: No, sadly. Hubs needs new work boots, we still need to figure out my car situation, etc. He kept apologizing and promising we'll get a pet once our old house sells but I'm just... Bummed. A little heartbroken after looking up so much rabbit care stuff, finding the cage, makin sure that rabbit in particular were still avilabke (LOTS of phone calls)... I just wanted a rabbit :(

Right now it's a coin flip on whether we get both cage and bunny - DH and I looked at finances and we're able to. The earliest we could get the cage is tomorrow so we would have to see if the fair people would be willing to hold on to the bunny for us until tomorrow. Then of course there's the 'Well what if it's sold already, where do we even get another bunny?' 'The pet store. Or a breeder.' 'Well how do you find a breeder?' 'I don't know, we could ask the people at the bunny barn' ((It was a chicken and rabbit barn, but it also had ducks, turkeys, etc)).... So we're thinking about it. Fifty fifty at this point. I'm pretty sure it won't happen though :( I hope I'm wrong. I think we need Peter Rabbit.

I have found a wonderful gently used wooden cage plus some food for $100 in my area. Apparently the owner had two bun buns for her 1 yo and 3 yo but the bun buns ran away. Tore her 3 yo up so she's selling it. I priced a similar one online for 150.

I called the fair to make sure the bunny we liked is still available and it is! The bunny itself would be $20 plus $7 for admission (just to get the bunny! Isn't it awful?). That's $127 for bunny and a nice non wire cage. Then there's still treats, grass, bedding to get but I have some upstairs (bedding) from when I had a dwarf hamster. And it needs a little hovel to hide in. So probably easy $200 for everything by the end of the day/week.

But then we'll have bunny and cage which are the most expensive... And it really is a very nice cage so we could use it again! So the rest of the expenses should go downhill from there - right?

We had two baby bunnies that grew into small to medium sized rabbits-- both netherland dwarfs-- and did not have a good experience. :( They were sweet as pie as babies, but as soon as they hit puberty it was a nightmare. We got them both fixed (one boy and one girl) and had to keep them apart until their stitches healed, then after that they were just MEAN. I got bitten every single day as I tried to feed them and change their water. It was awful. Every time I put my hands anywhere in the cage they would dart over and bite immediately. We did EVERYTHING to try and socialize them again, but I think the after puberty hit we were screwed. I even wore rubber gloves in the house for a long time to try and get them to socialize with humans again. It was awful and heartbreaking but we ended up giving them away to a family who wanted hutch bunnies, and they lived outdoors. I think they were much happier that way. Solitary and do nothing but eat and poop.

Rabbit pee is just like cat pee-- very ammonia-y, and very RED and stains. We used a litter called Yesterday's News which we loved. It's compressed newspaper pellets.

We built a custom cage that had a pull-out bottom (to change the litter easily) because the rabbits totally destroyed any kind of litter box we tried to put in their cage.

You need to supply them with hay or they will get sick from hairballs and their teeth will grow too long and they won't be able to eat.

Is it possible to play with the bunny first to see what its personality is like? Our bunnies started out like the most adorable sweet rabbits... loved to be cuddled every day... wandered our house like cats/dogs.. etc. Then one day it was like a switch flipped and they were fierce and wild creatures. We thought fixing them would help (that's what the vet said) and shelled out over $500 total to get them both fixed (then another $800 in emergency vet bills when the girl bunny tried to jump the partition to get to the boy bunny and broke her toe... Then another $600 in regular vet bills to re-set the toe because the emergency vet didn't set it properly so it was hanging by skin...)

But alas... nothing did it... :(

I had a rabbit growing up. I'm not sure I'd let my kids get a rabbit... But maybe I just had a bad experience. My rabbit (Jake :) ) did not like to be held or petted very much. He produced lots of poop and his bedding needed to be changed frequently... It got nasty quickly. But if I had a rabbit that was potty trained and sweet, I'm sure I'd feel differently! :) I always fed Jake the pellets plus hay, veggies (he LOVED carrots..haha) and fruit (he loved berries and the juice would dribble down his chin...so cute). Oh, and rabbits shed a lot-at least mine did- you have to brush them frequently.

So I've been looking at food and bedding, treats and toys - and it looks like the most expensive thing is going to be the cage. Has that been anyone else's experience too? Expensive cage but cheap on the everyday upkeep?

I had a rabbit that looked just like that one, growing up :) We kept her in the house in a cage, but had to change out the hay/bedding frequently b/c it would start to smell pretty quickly. She learned to walk on a leash and although we never potty trained her, we would let her out for short periods of time w/no accidents.

We fed her pellets w/fresh veggies and also bought bunny treats at the pet store. Lots of fresh water too. Good luck! Bunnies are such fun pets :D

@SugarplumsMom: Thanks for the great info hon! I'm really getting excited about the possibilitiy of a rabbit in the house. We could keep the cage in the dining room and let him run around and chase little man.

I'm even looking up cages on craigslist...

I had a Dwarf Dutch rabbit and he was the sweetest and smartest thing ever. Random rabbit tidbits:

- They are really easy to potty train.
- Feed them a variety of leafy greens.
- Fruit is good, but in small quantities.
- Always have a supply of hay available for your bunny. They need it for digestion. Alfalfa is good for babies, but when they're older, try other types (or limit the alfalfa).
- Rabbits can easily get overheated. When it's hot outside, put a frozen water bottle in its cage for some relief.
- It's possible to scare a rabbit to death. They're gentle creatures.
- But at the same time, they have varying personalities! My bunnies were are very sweet, but I've seen a lot of feisty rabbits!

I forgot to add the pellets. A good diet would include hay, veggies, some fruit, on top of the pellets.

@Pink Champagne: I think DH wants to train it like your friends. He really wants a cat but my dad's highly allergic and he wants to wait a few years - and properly fix the fence - before we get a puppy. He kepts saying the 'kids' need a pet but he really wants one too.

I would second the advice not to let your rabbit in around outside or even put the cage outside. That's how Bun-Bun disappeared....poor Bun-Bun...

My friends have a rabbit. It literally roams their house like a cat, and they trained it to potty in a litter box. So if you can do that, go forth and bunny up!

@NaturallyCathy: The bigger the cage, the better! Avoid heat - they get heatstroke easily. There are some veggies they can't eat due to diarrhea - I think lettuce is one. And I was told to always supplement the pellet food with veggies to avoid scurvy.

I had three rabbits growing up - Pockey Hang ran away and probably got eaten by coyotes. Robin Hood and Maid Marian got too hot outside one night :'(

So, the only suggestions I have are to not let rabbits run away or get too hot.

Also, to come up with better names ;)

We went to the county fair last night and fell in love with this beauty of a rabbit - it's apparently called an English Spot rabbit. It has black ears, black 'herringbone' along its spine, and black spots on its sides. The rest of the bunny rabbit is white, except for some black around the eyes. It's a medium sized bunny rabbit.

My question is - does anyone have any experience with taking care of this particular breed? Or any medium sized rabbit? What sized cage would we need? What type of food and treats, what kind of toys? Is it kid friendly? What kind of bedding?

Anyone? Thanks!
