I think that was when Dentists had just started getting certified for it, it was previously done by orthodontists, so she ran the special to get it off the ground and sell it to patients that clearly weren't there for orthodontia. My insurance paid for $1500 of orthodontia a year, so we were responsible for $2K. I changed trays every 2 weeks, and had to go in to see the dentist 1x a month to get my next 2 trays and so she could check my teeth and that the new trays fit properly. The buttons are super noticeable. And I had a crossbite in the front of my mouth so I had like 1 million buttons in the front and I might as well have had metal braces because that's how much I hated flashing my teeth with buttons all over them. I remember the day after getting them on, I was eating oatmeal and accidentally hit my spoon on my front teeth. I cried! Haha. For the most part, my teeth are still straight. There's one bottom tooth that's shifted a little but not enough to bother me. It usually moves back when I wear my old retainer (ew). I have invisalign at the moment, and my teeth hurt for a little while every time I switch trays. I try to do it at night before bed. Tylenol usually takes the edge off for me. I'm not sure if every place is like this, but I paid a flat fee ($5500) so I don't pay every time I switch trays...and they definitely are NOT invisible!! Especially when you have to get your attachments on your front teeth, like me... I had to pay one fixed rate and it covered the whole thing, evaluation, all the trays, visits, adjustments, the works. It did not cover the retainers after. And it was pretty $$$- I had them done in NJ before I moved to Boston. Insurance covered part of it. I don't know if it would have cost less if I needed fewer aligners (trays). Then I didn't wear my retainers and my teeth shifted enough that I did Invisalign after college. Both hurt plenty, and like @BeBop: said the Invisalign isn't invisible. But it was worth it for sure. I am quite sure our kids will need braces too. I'm surprised how many people here didn't! It worked well but they weren't invisible. I felt really self conscious about them. I never got used to the pain, I'd cry and cry every time they got tightened.
