with our first baby, the NICU nurses taught me how to give him a syringe suppository in his butt to make it easier for him to poo. DH couldn't do it, but I was ok with it.

@MrBee
Yes, my son had severe constipation for months, I had to give him glycerin suppositories every other day and then when those quit working I had to force mineral oil down his throat. That was so bad.. The next step was surgery, thank goodness it resolved itself.

Yuck. Luckily, I've never had to and I hope I never do! Obviously, I would do it if LO needed it but just the thought makes me nervous.

Yep. Suppositories and enemas we had severe constipation. He refused to go. It was an awful couple of months where he wouldn't poop without intervention. He even got to where he could hold it after a suppository. That's why we had to up the game to enema. It was awful

Wow. Suppositories in the lo. I hope to never have to do that! It was bad enough that I had some inserted a few days ago. I'm still slightly scarred from that.

@Rubies: Well this was an infant glycerin suppository. It took effect in maybe 30-60 seconds each time. It wasn't like a laxative or anything though; what came out seemed "normal." if that makes sense.

I think adult suppositories usually are designed to dissolve inside of you from body heat. I only ever had one administered, when I was in Japan (man, they love suppositories in Japan!). I don't remember much about it, except I was having trouble understanding what was being prescribed to me and then suddenly something was being shoved up my booty!

@Coco Bee: Like, immediately? Are we talking seconds? Minutes? I find this interesting only because I get really constipated but NEVER considered a suppository.

@Rubies: We used an infant glycerin suppository... it's like an oral syringe, except it is inserted in the other end. It's really easy to administer! It usually takes effect within 1 minute. We've only ever done it twice...

@mrbee: haha yup ;) lol
aww that's actually really cute!

@Rubies: it's a small oval shaped capsule-type thing that you just insert into their rectum and somehow it helps them become un-constipated.

@Coco Bee: I guess you really were serious about not liking poop!

I'm just not fazed by poop any more... and Charlie was just so relieved afterward. He saw the leftover suppositories and asked, "Is that for making me feel better?"

@Coco Bee: Maybe I've totally lost perspective, but I'd totally give someone else's kid a suppository! Next time just bring the kid out to Brooklyn, and I'll insert the suppository up their booty!

@mrbee: ummm kind of. but worse, way worse.

I was a FT live-in nanny in NY and one of the kids was a 3 yo girl who refused to be potty-trained and held it in instead to protest potty-training, inevitably she had severe constipation. *I*, the nanny, had to insert her suppositories.

Just imagine doing it to SOMEONE ELSE'S kid. :-/

We just gave Charlie a suppository and it worked so quickly! It was awe-inspiring. He hadn't gone in two days, which was making potty training tricky! Other than that, potty training is going really well.
