@gilmoregirl: my son did the exact same thing. I turned to grab his diaper and when I turned back he was holding the tube of hydrocortisone with the top off. I made my husband call because I felt like such a horrible mom and kept bursting into tears.

Yes, my 2 year old decided to eat a handful of bath and body works soap, rather than wash his hands with it. They said it was totally fine, and tummy upset would be the only potential side effect. He was fine!

One sleepy night, when she was 9 mo we meant to give DD gripe water but accidentally gave her baby ibuprofen. Double dose. I freaked, called poison control but they assured me double dosing is okay (or not dangerous if done once) and that she would just be extra not in pain. She was fine. I was the complete opposite of a super mom. A super bad mom? Ugh. I felt horrible. DH was searching for epicac just incase.

Not for mine, yet. But for an old boss' kid- allllll the time. This is why my toddler doesn't run loose in the vet clinic. The best one was a can of activated charcoal, it was everywhere. He looked like a coal miner :silly:

Yes. Twice. Once because she grabbed a plant and put it in her mouth. We didn't know if it was poisonous or not. The second time was grabbing on of the silica patches in her mouth or close to it. It scared me to death. They are very sweet and calm when you call.

Once. DS was like 9 months and I let him munch on some graham crackers without realizing they were the kind with honey in them. The poison control lady was very nice about telling me I was completely overreacting.

I know these stories were all scary esp at the time, but I'm laughing a little at how many of us were told our LOs were nowhere near the toxic limit when they ate or drank something they shouldn't have. It's actually kind of a relief to me, I think.

As for me, I called when I found my son eating a tube of hydrocortisone at like 10 months or so. I didn't know he'd be able to get the top off! Apparently it's no big deal unless he had eaten more than 1 oz (which is the size of the full tube).

Scary! K ate some hand sanitizer once (I put some in his hand for him to rub but he ate it instead, he was 3 I think). I called our on call nurse who transferred us to poison control - they were very efficient and helpful! He wouldve had to have like 1/2 cup or something for it to be potentially harmful.

Hope your LO is doing ok!

@PawPrints: supposedly? My BIL had changed the oil and hadn't thrown it away yet. But when she called and said her dd drank oil the first question they asked was if it was used. I'm not sure why it makes a difference though.

Yes! 3 times.

Once when DS was 18 months old. He found my eye drops, opened the bottle and drank half of them. I was in the room and had taken my eye off him for a minute. They told me to watch his breathing and take him in it he seemed drowsy.

DD1 licked purrell once at 16 months and they said she would be fine. She also ate a Pop It on the 4th of July when she was 2. I was SO hysterical (I tried to stop her) and poison control said she might have an upset tummy but otherwise she would be fine.

Phew!

DD2 luckily hasn't swallowed anything she wasn't suppose to yet!

@Miss Ariel: Used motor oil is fine?

I haven't but LO isn't walking yet. I feel safer because we don't keep any household cleaning products around that have a poison control warning on them, but this thread is a good reminder that babies will eat anything and there's always stuff you don't think about.

We have twice. One because my husband let LO shake a bottle of Ibuprofen he thought was closed (back when she was an infant and loved to shake things to make noise), but the bottle wasn’t closed all the way and it opened and pills sprayed all over the place and neither of us could tell if LO ate any. Turns out she would have had to eat a ton for it to be an issue. Other time because my husband misread the Tylenol dosing instructions and gave her twice that amount he was suppose to. I told him it was fine (“just don’t do it again!) but he felt HORRIBLE and insisted on calling, and the nurse was awesome and really talked him off the ledge as it was totally fine.

Whew, these are all good to know! We haven't had to call yet (touch wood), but almost did after my LO ate a handful of hydrangea. Hydrangea always comes up on the list of ten most poisonous common plants, but apparently you need to eat an awful lot to have any side effects.
