I tossed someone from a project I was in charge of and she was fired a couple months later. She was completely incompetent and I was the last person in the office willing to take her on - she had drug and alcohol problems and was hired to do a job that required driving but she didn't have a licence due to DUIs. No one could figure out why she was even hired. I could usually make things work but one day a project just absolutely needed done and she was throwing one of her fits so I kicked her off. Big mistake - turns out the reason she was unfit but still working with us was because she was living with my married boss, who knows how that worked. Within a couple months he had fired her and kicked her out but I definitely didn't get on my bosses good side and I lost about all my respect for him, so from then on I just started looking for a new job myself.

I don't have a position with the authority to fire or lay-off. Maybe one day.

I've had to fire 1 person due to performance at my corporate job.

Meanwhile, at the hubby and I's business, we've had to fire quite a few people. It's hard, but when they aren't performing up to your standards and demand a certain pay, you better earn your keep ya know?

Yes, and it wasn't a good day, even though the person was being fired for a very good reason.

I've fired a person before, and had to lay off three people.

The person I fired was a terrible employee and while it always sucks to tell someone they don't have a job anymore, it was justified.

What was really hard was telling three good people who worked hard and were good at their jobs that they were being laid off.

No, I've never been in a position where people were reporting into me at work or had anyone working in my home to fire. But my last job was a management position (with no direct reports) so I did get to weigh in on performance evaluations and I would know who was getting the boot ahead of time.

Twice - once I had an employee with a serious drinking problem who kept coming to work heavily under the influence and the other an employee who had serious performance issues. I was not the hiring manager for either and would not have hired either of these people, so it sucked to have to do it but it was better for each company and in the end I think helpful for each of those people, who ended up doing better where they landed.

Kind of. I used to work at an impatient facility with adults with mental illnesses. They had a work program where the clients were able to do random jobs for money. And if they did poorly I had to be the one to tell them. But they had to be very very bad to get fired from that.

I may have to in the next few weeks and am dreading it. We have an employee who bought a ticket to go out of the country during the busiest part of the year for bridal (now!) even though she's worked in bridal before and knows that this is the time of year you don't take time off during. She has a bad attitude, too. I don't think we'll be able to keep her position open for two weeks because we'll need somebody else to work while she's gone.
I told my boss that she needs to be the one to tell her, but I have a feeling it'll be up to me. UGH!

We had company wide layoffs and I had to tell 6 people. One guy (someone that was lazy and should have been fired)was so upset he got drunk after getting laid off and waited downstairs to talk to me at the end of my work day. He screamed and accused me of ruining his life and other nonsense. That was pretty scary but our building security shooed him away.
That was 4 years ago...I got a text a few months from that guy who told me that he put me down as a reference! Um..ok?

Never fired someone - I'm a teacher!

I have had to fail people doing their teaching pracs, which is a fairly big deal and usually an indicator that you suck at teaching. 2 of them quit uni and went and did something else.

I have gotten rid of nannies too.

For work, I haven't had to let anyone go but I kinda forced someone to quit by giving him no bonus.

I had to fire someone. It was a new employee who was just always distracted and not performing. Wasn't exactly fun, but wasn't as bad as I thought. Luckily, they didn't get angry or anything, just complained that they should have stayed on unemployment instead of accepting the job in the first place (!)

Yes one nanny because she was a live-out and she wasn't willing to live-in, but at the time my DH and I decided a live-in would be better for our family. Then we found our 2nd nanny, a live-in, and we let her go when DD was old enough to go to pre-school and we no longer needed her (nor could afford her plus preschool)

Eta: sorry I should've said in my original post that they were being let go for reasons other than their performance.

Yes. We had company-wide layoffs and I had to tell 4 employees their job was being eliminated.

I also was preparing to fire an employee once and during the meeting I had with him, he quit! And he agreed to work two more weeks! It was the craziest meeting I have ever had. :-)

Have you ever had to fire someone or lay them off? How did it go?
