@Mrs. Cat In The Cradle: I like the wording you used... I will have to write that down for when I call them back! Thanks!

@Lindsayinnyc: it is a bit of a step back, so that is good to say too. The schedule and money were both things I was weighing, but the money is really the deal breaker. The schedule has the potential to improve by the summer but it would take a lot to get the salary back up to what I'm making now (raises are hard to get, they usually just bonus)

I would be honest... Tell her that you while you're grateful for the offer, you can't afford to take a step backwards (if you will) career-wise and financially. See if they'll make a counter-offer or something. Would you take the less money if it meant a better schedule or is money more important?

I think something along the lines of "I'm sorry, I looked at the entire situation and the numbers, and I just can't make it work. If the budget for this position ever changes, I would certainly be interested in discussing it, because I really think I'd be a good fit and asset." As for the coworkers, I'd be kind but vague.

I have turned down a job, but I was starting a grad program, so that was my reason.

I recently interviewed for a different department at work. The job would be more specialized than what I'm doing now. They called today and said they want to offer me the job, but they can't give me the pay I am making now, it would be $2 less/hr. The hours are less desirable than I am working now (I'm basically being treated as a new employee, but have almost 2 years experience).

So, long story short, I think I want to turn them down. In my current position, I will still work with these people. Many people in that department knew I was interviewing and were telling me how excited they were to work with me more.

So how do I tell not only the hiring manager, but the co-workers I am turning down the job offer? The hiring manger knows the $ was a big factor for me (I mentioned it in the interview), but how do I tell the other co-workers who I will still see and work with occasionally? I'd also like to keep the door open if they can hire me later at more $.

Have you had to turn down a job? How did you do it?
