I had a friend who took a ride from some random strangers in NYC when we couldn't get a cab-- I was so mad at her, and they ended up driving through Queens before dropping her off in the east village where we were going. And I totally forgot about this one - I have never and would never do this, but there is a charity in the UK that runs a fairly large fund-raising effort every year called "Hitch". You sign up to hitchhike to either Croatia or Morocco and get people to sponsor you. I was living in Hoboken and working in Manhattan after 9/11, and normally took the bus through the Lincoln Tunnel. My bus stop was the last one before the tunnel, and directly on the route that a lot of cars would take. </p> <p>Right after 9/11, there were restrictions in place that prohibited cars with only one driver from entering the tunnel, so there would often be cars that would stop at my bus stop and offer a ride to people waiting for the bus. I said yes on more than one occasion. I would never do it in the USA though. My brother hitchhikes all over. I took a bus to get too and from the city to do my shopping, banking, etc. The bus company workers went on strike quite often, so my only option for getting out of town was flagging down random vehicles. Though this is relatively common in the country I was living in (Bolivia).
