@Applesandbananas: I threw out my back in this most recent pregnancy and I was MISERABLE. Could hardly sit up, much less take care of my toddler. I went to the chiropractor (one that specializes in women's health), and I felt slightly better immediately after adjustments....but she gave me very specific instructions on what was wrong, how to bring down inflammation, etc.

I followed her instructions and felt so much better within 48 hours, but continued with some follow ups because I had hip problems throughout the pregnancy. The chiro definitely helped my back and hip pain and I was a total sceptic before.

@Applesandbananas: For me, it took a few sessions (I was hit by a semi-truck) but there was definite lessening of pain. I was pain-free within a month of my first session. I've had adjustments in my neck when I had a crick in it and the pain relief was almost instantaneous, I just had to wait for the residual muscle soreness to fade.

@Applesandbananas: You should definitely try to go soon. I went a couple of weeks after my car accident a few years ago and I wish I had gone sooner. I didn't realize HOW much pain I was in until I wasn't anymore. I didn't realize that I had had desensitization in my right leg until I was adjusted and it started tingling.

@avivoca: I found a chiropractor near my house that says they get new patients in same day. Fingers crossed they can get me in Monday and I can get out of work for it.

@MrsSRS: we don't have any and he isn't going to the store. :( I typically do the grocery shopping on Saturdays but that's just not happening today and he hasn't grocery shopped in years.

I have had two back injuries in the last four months alone! It's miserable. I'm actually worried my back will never go back to normal. I had sciatica really badly during pregnancy, but whatever I have now is different.

If you can get to a chiropractor - please do! They are amazing. I have been going consistently for 12 years due to headaches, migraines, and in recent years, back issues. They get me back to functioning quickly. I do a 15 minute massage with adjustment, and when my back is really bad I do the electric stimulation machine and the spinal decompression machine.

@Applesandbananas: You might want to try a chiropractor on Monday. I'm sorry you are in so much pain!

You can also get a heat/cold pack at Target. Throw it in the freezer and then once it's good and cold, put it on your back. It will mold to you. I also like to alternate heat and ice. If you know someone who has a TENS unit, that might help too.

@Applesandbananas: I have this ice pack and it's amazing for back pain. http://www.healthyyouweb.com/Chattanooga-Oversize-Black-Polyurethane-Colpac-p/CH1556.htm?gclid=Cj0KEQiAqK-zBRC2zaXc8MOiwfIBEiQAXPHrXgqFiUFwkpKgnCFQBoqrEBvFmnU6EIi19U0G5_t90XQaAtF-8P8HAQ

(Sorry for the super long link.)
I ordered it through Amazon but any drug store will have a soft ice pack that will help, I've just never seen one this big in a drug store.

Lucky or unlucky for me, both DH and I have had back problems so at least we are sympathetic. It's awful when you just can't do anything.

@Anagram: how do you ice your back? Do just fill a ziploc with some ice?

It's way worse today. I have Vicodin from a dental procedure a few months ago and it's not providing much relief. I've also been taking Motrin and using the heating pad but I'm in a lot of pain.

DH isn't being very helpful, he thinks I'm being a big baby, but just trying to get up from a seated position nearly makes me cry.

I've had muscle spasms in both my lower back and my neck. So awful, it immobilizes you for days, even weeks.

If it's really bad you can get painkillers and muscle relaxants from the doctor. When I went the last time it happened, I actually got a shot in my butt. Apparently anti inflammatory (basically motrin) that works much faster as an injection to get me some immediate relief. Because I've had a history of these issues and my doctor knows I have young kids at home, she gave me 3 types of painkillers and told me to start with the mildest, then work my way up if it didn't help enough. All they do is knock me out, though, so I had to cut back on them after a while.

Other than that, heat and rest is the only thing that will help!

I good massage could help after its not so painful. But if you are still in pain it may be worth seeing a dr for a muscle relaxer.

I get a massage /adjustment once a month for ongoing back issues.

I have recurring back issues, my recommendation would be to rest it as much as you can and to try and use good posture and good form when you sit, bend, etc. Also, if it doesn't feel better in a few days, I'd recommend a visit to a chiropractor or physical therapist. In my experience they are much better at identifying the root of the issue and correcting it with stretches, exercise and adjustments, than GPs who tend to just tell you to take lots of pain relievers or muscle relaxants - which may help with some issues but not with others.

I'd say give it a week of heat and whatever Otc pain reliever you can take. Or try ice, whichever provides more relief. Gentle stretching in ways that don't exacerbate pain. If you aren't 25-50% better in a week I'd say go see your GP and get a referral to go see a PT. most back pain goes away on its own or with minimal intervention. It just sucks and it pretty debilitating when it's acute. Avoid lifting, bending and prolonged positions. Try to walk and move as much as you can
Numbness, tingling , weakness or over weird symptoms warrant a trip to your GP
(Physical therapist here, but obv this is general advice)

I've thrown my back out a few times- thankfully mostly pre kid so it was a little easier to avoid any lifting. Ice is actually usually more helpful than heat (but heat feels so nice!). If it persists I highly recommend a big soft ice pack that you can sit back on. Very gentle stretches (actually, heat before stretching is best and ice the rest of the time, per my PT). Ibuprofen will help not just with the pain, but with the swelling of the muscles, so take it regularly.

I hope it feels better quickly! If it's really bad a doctor came prescribe muscle relaxers but they have never really helped me that much and I hate how they make me feel so fuzzy.

@Applesandbananas: If you just pulled a muscle, it hopefully won't take as long to heal. Sciatic nerve issues take forever to resolve, so mine being better after a couple weeks was actually pretty quick. Assuming that's NOT what you're dealing with, hopefully you'll feel better after just a couple days!

A couple months ago, I did something that pinched my sciatic nerve. I had shooting pain in my lower back and down my left leg. I took a LOT of ibuprofen, but I didn't go to the doctor because after talking to a few people, I didn't think there was anything they could do about it. It was hard though because I couldn't pick up Xander and I had to take things slow and easy. My husband helped out a lot and it got better after a few weeks.

If I were you, I'd probably take some ibuprofen and use the heating pad, but if it doesn't feel like it's getting better in a couple days, call the doctor. And take it easy! As easy as you can anyway as the mom of a toddler.

I'm not sure exactly what I've done, but my lower back is messed up. I think it's related to a car seat fiasco with my 32lb toddler in which I had to force him into the seat and then he started kicking me, hard, and I slipped trying to dodge his feet.

It's all in my lower back and feels like a pulled muscle. I brought in a heating pad to use at my desk today and have taken ibuprofen. I'm not sure if I should go to a doctor or do anything other than heat and ibuprofen.

Anyone else ever been in this situation?
