I mostly loved it! My first year of university I lived in the basement suite of an elderly couple's house, but I avoided them like crazy. That was probably the closest I've been to living alone. Overall it wasn't bad but it was often lonely, mainly because I was far away from family. I lived one year completely on my own and then got a cat so it was a little better. I had just moved from my college dorm that I shared with 3 other girls so it was awesome having all the space to myself and not seeing everyone else's mess everywhere. There are downsides though, like it's a lot more lonely. If my friends weren't around one weekend, I would literally spend the entire time alone only leaving to run errands. That got old pretty fast for sure. It's also scarier living alone, I feel safer if someone else is there. I lived with my family and then my husband. I don't regret not really living on my own. I lived by myself for a couple years while DH was deployed and stationed far away. I was surprised at how much I felt like it helped me to be a more independent adult. It felt so good to have a place that was mine, and that I was solely responsible for – I dunno, it gave me a sense of pride I guess that was totally different from living with family, a boyfriend or roommates. It was only for about a 6 month stint both times, though--the first time I bought out of my lease early to move to a better place with a friend, and the second time I got married and DH moved in.
